JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps women's basketball team tamed Birmingham-Southern in the SAA opener, 64-37 inside the Hangar Dome on Sunday.
Millsaps (7-1, 1-0 SAA) dominated Birmingham-Southern (2-6, 0-1 SAA) off the bench (31-5), in the paint (32-18) and outrebounded the Panthers (48-33).
BSC was held to 21.5 percent throughout the game and 11.8 percent in the second half (4-of-34).
Sophomore
Elyse Warren posted 18 points, nine rebounds and a block in reserve. Junior
Whitney Novak added 10 points as senior
Helena Roe added nine points and six defensive rebounds. Junior
Haley Franklin finished with seven points, nine rebounds, four assists, two steals and a blocked shot.
The Majors shot 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the field in the first quarter, starting off with back-to-back Roe 3-pointers.Novak later converted an and-one opportunity to give the Majors an 11-2 cushion.
Midway through the opening quarter, a Panther layup would cut the lead down to four, but the Majors pushed back to close the quarter ahead, 25-14.
In the second quarter, a Franklin layup gave the Majors a 13-point lead before freshman
Tia Anderson made it a 36-21 contest just before intermission.
The Majors would close out the third with a Franklin buzzer-beater to make it a 55-33 game at that point.
With three minutes remaining in the fourth, senior
Maddie Howell would give the Majors their largest lead of 29 points, following a trey.
Millsaps would continue to hold off their opponents the remainder of the afternoon and claim the victory over BSC, 64-37.
