Centenary Drops Men’s Basketball in Midweek Rematch

Majors End Busy Stretch in Louisiana on Tuesday

SHREVEPORT, La. – The Millsaps men's basketball team was unable to complete the season sweep of Centenary, falling 85-45 inside the Gold Dome on Tuesday.

Tuesday's matchup was a rematch of a 75-62, Millsaps triumph from Nov. 26.

Millsaps (2-8, 1-0 SAA) was led by sophomore Rodney Phillips Jr. (12 points, eight rebounds) and junior Drew Roth (seven points, 12 rebounds). Roth combined for 25 boards in the two matchups against the Gents this season.

Centenary (5-5, 1-1 SCAC) secured a 29-10 edge in forced turnovers, which resulted in a 39-7 differential in points-off-turnovers. The Gents outshot the Majors 41.1 percent (30-of-73) to 28.6 percent (16-of-56).

Centenary rushed out of the gates, building a 10-1 margin by the first media timeout. A nifty scoop layup by junior Nicholas Ughovwa would end the run moments later and provide the Majors their first field goal.

The Gents answered with 10 consecutive points to grow a 20-3 advantage, forcing a Millsaps timeout with 12:22 remaining. Midway through, sophomore Devin Bass connected on a free throw to make it a 25-4 contest.

With 4:10 to play in the opening half, sophomore Rodney Phillips Jr. converted an and-one to cut the lead to 38-14.

An Ughovwa putback layup ended the first half scoring, which saw the Gents take a 44-19 lead into intermission.

The Majors would put together a 9-2 run, which was punctuated by a sophomore Dakota Gasca stepback trey midway through the second half. Centenary responded with a 20-2 burst to pull away.

Freshman Noah Babineaux netted the final four points for the Majors with a pair of free throws and putback make just before the buzzer. The Gents however claimed the rematch, 85-45.

After playing five games in nine days, the Majors will break from game action for a little while. Millsaps will next travel to face LeTourneau University on Saturday, Dec. 30. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. with live video and live stats available at gomajors.com.
