Baseball Opens Season with Series Win over LeTourneau

Majors Take Two-of-Three Games on Friday and Saturday

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps baseball team opened the season by securing a two-out-of-three victories over LeTourneu University on Friday and Saturday at Twenty Field.

Game 1: 7-5, W

Junior pitcher Will Cook stood out and shut the Yellowjackets down in four innings of relief. He tallied seven strikeouts and only allowed two hits with one walk. Senior starting pitcher Wil Wood struck out eight in five innings of work.

Offensively, graduate Chris Hart finished 3-for-5 with one RBI and one run, while both senior Austin Arceneaux and junior Case Page finished 2-for-4 with a run and RBI each. Junior Jackson Ware also scored twice.

The Yellowjackets scored in the top of the first, but the Majors answered with two runs in the second inning. Ware hit a homer and Hart singled home freshman EJ Ousley. The Majors would answer with back-to-back scores with Arceneaux and Ware scoring unearned runs.
 
LeTourneau added two runs in the third, but Millsaps came alive with three of their own off a throwing error and senior Josh Laurent single. The visitors responded with a two-run homer in the fourth to tie the game at 5-5.

Arceneaux and Page would delivered clutch hits in the seventh to put the Major ahead, 7-5 and they would hold on.

Game 2: 5-2, W (7 Innings)

Junior pitcher Jackson Hood was a tremendous in 5.2 IP where he struck out six batters, walked two and only yielded three hits and one unearned run. Rising sophomore Will Norris stepped up with two strikeouts in 1.1 innings pitched.

Junior Case Page was the offensive spark for the team going 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Mason Morgan and Branyan Bounds posted RBIs. Additionally, junior Jackson Ware finished with two RBIs.

The Yellowjackets scored the opening run, but the game changed quickly as Millsaps took a 3-1 advantage in the bottom of the first. Page, Ware and Morgan batted in runs.

Millsaps extended its advantage to 5-1 when Bounds singled home a run in the third and Ware plated an RBI single. LeTearneau would add another run in the seventh and final inning, but it was too little, too late.

Game 3: 14-9, L

Arceneaux was strong in Saturday's defeat by going 4-for-6 with one run and one RBI. Page had a solid performance going 2-for-4 and drawing a walk. Sophomore Bradley Pelle registred two walks and three runs scores, while teammates Sam Pitre, Bounds, Zac Farris and EJ Ousley all garnered two hits.

Millsaps got on the board first off a wild pitch, but the Yellowjackets would build a 5-1 lead by the fifth inning.

The Majors would cut into the deficit to make it 7-4 after six innings, but LeTourneau would score five to put the game out of reach and eventually grab a 14-9 win.
