Junior Case Page Goes 3-for-5 in Defeat to Begin the BSC Spring Classic

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Millsaps baseball team fell, 7-5 to Huntingdon in the opening game of the BSC Spring Classic at Striplin Field, hosted by Birmingham-Southern on Friday.

Junior Case Page went 3-for-5 with an RBI, while both graduate Chris Hart and senior Joshua Laurent batted 2-for-4 and scored a run each. Senior Sam Pitre went 2-for-3 with two walks and scored a run.

Millsaps took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Hart and Pitre led off with singles before a poor throw advanced both into scoring position. Senior Austin Arceneaux provided the opening tally with a sacrifice fly to score Hart from third.

The Hawks answered with three runs in the top of the fourth off three hits, a passed ball and a throwing error to take a 3-1 advantage.

Laurent singled to begin the Majors' half of the fourth and reached scoring position following a sacrifice bunt. Laurent then advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when Hart stole second base and the throw ended up in center field. The Majors cut the deficit to 3-2.

However, Huntingdon came right back and tacked on an additional three runs to open the sixth. The Majors would post a score of their own in the bottom of the inning courtesy of a Jackson Ware single and Laurent double. David Abbadessa grounded out, but scored Laurent to back it 6-3.

The Hawks would threaten again in the ensuing inning, but center fielder Ware made a spectacular throw to keep an additional run off the scoreboard by throwing a runner out at home.

Millsaps responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh after sophomore Bradley Pelle singled and Pitre walked to open the frame. Pelle stole third and scored on a throwing error, which was followed by a wild pitch and Page RBI to plate Pitre.

Huntingdon would push their lead back up to 7-5 in the top of the eighth after posting another tally. Freshman Taylor Lowe pitched 1.1 innings to close the game, striking out two batters, walking one and allowing no runs.

Hart singled in the eighth and Page singled in the ninth, but neither would be plated around home, allowing the Hawks to escape with a 7-5 win

Millsaps will face host and No. 4 Birmingham-Southern in a non-conference meeting on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. with live stats and video available at gomajors.com
