JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps men's basketball team split a pair of games over the weekend by besting Hendrix, 79-68 on Friday before narrowly falling to Rhodes, 81-75 during Senior Day on Sunday.
Game 1: Millsaps 79, Hendrix 68
Senior
Doug Watson posted 16 points, four rebounds and two assists, while freshman
Dakota Gasca added 13 points and four rebounds of his own. Junior
Aaron Ursin contributed 10 points, four rebounds and grabbed a steal to power a balanced scoring effort.
Hendrix controlled the paint (48-34 points advantage), but the Majors shot 49.1 percent from the floor and held the Warriors to 16.7 percent (3-18) from three-point range. Millsaps also netted 17 free throw makes and outscored the opposing bench, 29-18.
Both teams would battle back and forth, trading the lead nine teams. Watson converted a three-pointer to put the Majors out front 17-12 in the opening seven minutes of the game.
Freshman guard
Stewart Bonnecaze connected on another three-pointer to push the margin to 11 points at 32-21 with just under six minutes remaining before halftime .
The Warriors made impactful adjustments and battled back to lead 44-43 with 16 minutes to play.
Millsaps responded and posted a 12-2 run, which was punctuated by an emphatic
James Little fast-break dunk.
Hendrix would cut the deficit to 62-60 with 6:31 to play but was pushed back yet again when the Majors rattled off the next seven points. The SAA squads would trade baskets down the stretch, but Millsaps would secure a 79-68 victory.
Game 2: Rhodes 81, Millsaps 75
The Majors were unable to overcome an early deficit and fell to Rhodes on Senior Day. Seniors
Rodreekas Bush and
Doug Watson were recognized prior to the game.
Gasca tallied a team-high 16 points and grabbed three rebounds. Watson posted 12 points and two steals. Ursin, junior
James Little and freshman
Rodney Phillips Jr. each tallied 11 points.
Millsaps was efficient offensively and shot 50 percent in the second half (16-32). However, Rhodes was able to convert 55.6 percent from three-point range (10-18) for the game.
The Lynx built a 21-point advantage as late as 40-19 with four minutes remaining in the first half. Rhodes then led 77-62 with 3:35 to play in the game, but the Majors would make a furious late comeback to cut it a four-point game. The Lynx would hold on with only seven seconds remaining at the point and escape with an 81-75 win.
