BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Millsaps men's and women's swimming and diving programs combined for 14 program records, while graduate
Bryan Sullivan secured SAA Men's Swimmer of the Year recognition at the four-day 2023 Southern Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships, Feb. 8-11 inside the Birmingham CrossPlex.
The men's team posted a program-best fifth-place finish with 261 points, while the women placed seventh with 190 points.
Sullivan was named the SAA Men's Swimmer of the Year after tallying the most points as an individual with two event wins, a runner-up finish and a spot on four relays.
He won and set a conference meet record in the 50-yard free with a time of 20.48 seconds. Sullivan broke his own record of 20.59 from the 2022 meet. He also won the 100 breaststroke in 55.68. Both his wins were NCAA B cut time standards.
The Jackson, Miss., product also recorded a runner-up performance in the 100 fly (49.58 finals, 49.16 prelims).
Freshman
Benjamin Anderson also had a strong meet by finishing seventh in the 50 free alongside Sullivan with a mark of 21.19. He swam 21.04 in the prelims as well.
Anderson proved to be a triple threat as he also finished sixth in the 100 free (46.96 finals, 46.87 prelims) as well as seventh in the 200 free, where he a set the school record of 1:43.52.
Fellow freshman
Andrew Meadows established a school record of his own in the 400 IM in 4:25.76 to place ninth. Meadows also finished 13th in the 200 back (2:08.21) and 14th in the 100 back (59.15).
A pair of Millsaps men's swimmers also scored points for the Majors in senior
Cooper Clevenger and freshman
Kaiden Auzenne. Clevenger was 15th in the 200 back (2:18.28) and Auzenne was 16th in the 100 back (1:02.43).
The team also set three relay records and nearly reached two others. Sullivan, Anderson, Meadows and Auzenne swam the 200-yard medley relay in 1:37.28. Sullivan additionally set the 50-yard backstroke program mark in the event (22.23).
The same quartet also set a record in the 400-yard medley (3:39.95) as well as the 400-yard free relay (3:13.89). The four were only 0.06 seconds away from the record in the 200-yard free relay at 1:27.81.
Auzenne, Clevenger were joined by freshman
Thad Erato and junior
Casey Miller in being just 0.5 seconds away from the 800-yard free relay record, swimming 7:54.53.
On the women's side, the Majors secured six new program bests. Sophomore
Catherine Passarelli swam a new standard of 5:34.90 in the 500-yard free prelims. She finished 16th in the finals with a 5:35.29 mark. Passarelli also swam the 1650-yard free in 19:42.17 to score in 15th.
Freshman
Zoe Cowell also set an improved record in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:36.16, 14th). She was also 13th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.08) behind sophomore
Kat Burns (1:07.83, 5th). Burns also recorded scores in the 100 free (55.04, 13th) and 50 free (25.21, 14th).
Junior
Ginny Ray Clevenger also rewrote the record book with an 11th-place performance in the 400 IM (4:52.97). She also placed 10th in the 200 butterfly (2:18.97).
Lastly, the Majors set four relay records of their own at the meet. Clevenger, Burns and sophomore
Chloee Beebe and junior
Madisyn Latino swam the 400-yard medley in 4:12.92. Clevenger's 100-yard backstroke leg was also a record (1:04.57).
Clevenger, Passarelli, Beebe and Latino combined for a record time of 8:32.27 in the 800 free relay. In the 200-yard free, Burns, Latino, Passarelli and sophomore
Alexandra Raybourn swam 1:44.89, while the 200-yard medley consisted of freshman
Abigail Hoffman, Burns, Clevenger and Latino (1:54.83).
Sullivan will now wait to hear how he placed in several events and likely qualify for the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships. The championships will be held at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C., March 15-18.
