Women’s Basketball Sweeps BSC to Advance to SAA Semifinals

Haley Franklin Nearly Records Triple-Double, Elyse Warren Nets Career-Highs in 84-67 Win on Sunday

JACKSON, Miss. – The No. 3-seeded Millsaps women's basketball team downed No. 6-seed Birmingham-Southern for the third time this season, 84-67 in the SAA Quarterfinal inside the Hangar Dome on Sunday.

Millsaps (19-7, 9-5 SAA) outscored the Panthers in the paint, 56-34 and outperformed the bench, 46-24. Birmingham-Southern (13-13, 6-8 SAA) was also outrebounded by the Majors, 44-32.

Rising freshman Elyse Warren accumulated career-highs of 23 points and 14 rebounds, which marked her sixth double-double over the last nine games.

Sophomore Haley Franklin nearly notched a triple-double with 10 points, 11 rebounds and a career-high nine assists.

Junior DeZarae Stewart elevated her game with 15 points and seven rebounds, while classmate Helena Roe tallied 12 points and three boards.

The Panthers jumped ahead, 4-0 early before Millsaps tied it at 14-14 through 10 minutes.

Going into the second quarter, the Panthers carried a four-point lead (20-16) following a pair of three-pointers. However, the Majors would close the half on an 18-7 run and lead 34-27 at intermission thanks in large part to back-to-back Roe buckets.

The third quarter would feature several runs. Back-to-back sophomore Meagan Bickmann three-pointers fueled an 8-0 run and pushed Millsaps out front, 44-29 with 6:47 remaining in the frame.

Trailing by 18, Birmingham-Southern battled back to cut the margin to nine points at 59-50 with 1:36 to play in the third.

Warren was unstoppable in the fourth as she scored eight consecutive points for the Majors, pushing the advantage to 70-56 with under seven minutes on the clock.

The lead continued to grow from there as the Majors claimed an 84-67 triumph to advance to the SAA Semifinals.

Millsaps will be back in action as they face No. 2-seed Rhodes in Danville, Ky., beginning at 4 p.m. CT on Saturday. The winner will face the winner of No. 1 Centre and No. 4 Berry on Sunday. Live video and stats will be available at gomajors.com.
