Softball Bested by No. 6 Belhaven in Saturday Doubleheader

Majors Next Open SAA Play with Rhodes at Home, March 4-5

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps softball team was downed 10-1 and 11-0 in five innings to No. 6 Belhaven at Jim McLeod Field on Saturday.

Game 1: 10-1, L

Junior Katie Norris went 1-2 with a walk and an RBI to lead the Majors offensively in Game One.

Classmate Molli Perry scored a run and added a stolen base, while senior Mackenzie Fleming and freshman Tayler Gonzales tallied hits. Junior Brianna Newman added a pair of walks as well.

Belhaven grabbed a 6-0 lead after the first inning. The Majors tallied two singles in the following inning, but were kept off the scoreboard.

Millsaps would score in the third after Perry reached on an error and promptly stole second base to reach scoring position. After a Newman walk, Perry was assisted home by Norris off a single to center field.

The Blazers would then tally three runs in the bottom of the third, add another in the fifth and hold the Majors scoreless to put the run-rule in effect.

Game 2: 11-0, L
 
Perry would record a walk along with another stolen base in Game Two. Gonzales and senior Amber Clark also walked, while junior Haylie Hoffpauir spoiled a no-hit bid.
 
Senior pitcher Hannah Derouen struck out three batters, held Belhaven scoreless and to only one hit in 1.1 innings of relief.
 
The Blazers tallied six runs again to open the contest. The hosts added four in the second and one run in the third inning.
 
Perry and Gonzales garnered their walks in the fourth, while Hoffpauir singled and Clark walked in the fifth.

Millsaps next will host Rhodes for a three-game series to open Southern Athletic Association play, beginning Saturday, March 4 at 12 p.m. Live video and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
