ATLANTA – The Millsaps women's basketball team battled back in the second half and sank clutch free throws late to down Oglethorpe, 64-60 inside the Dorough Field House on Sunday.
Freshman
Elyse Warren tallied her third double–double of the season with a career-high 19 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Sophomore
Haley Franklin (16 points, four assists, three steals) was a powerful force again and reached double figures in scoring for the 20th time this season.
Classmate
Whitney Novak added eight points, while junior
Helena Roe grabbed eight rebounds.
Millsaps (15-7, 6-5 SAA) grounded the Stormy Petrels to 29.5 percent shooting (18-of-61), while the bench capitalized with a dominate 31-11 margin in reserve scoring.
Oglethorpe (11-10, 5- 6 SAA) struggled down low defensively, yielding a 32-20 Millsaps points in the paint advantage.
Both teams struggled early on the offensive end. Junior
Maddie Howell scored the first basket of the game for the Majors, cutting the early deficit to 5-3 at the five-minute mark. Millsaps would then use a 7-0 run in the quarter to hold a slim 11-9 edge after 10 minutes of play.
A back-and-forth second quarter would see the Stormy Petrels retaliate with back-to-back three pointers before going into halftime on a 9-0 flurry and out front, 25-19.
Following another Oglethorpe three-pointer, the Majors recharged in the third quarter as Warren uplifted her teammates with five consecutive points.
Senior
Emily Sims would further change the momentum of the game with a crucial three-pointer to tie the game at 32-32 with four minutes remaining in the third frame. Oglethorpe would respond from the 8-0 Major rally and push ahead to a 44-39 lead entering the final quarter.
The Millsaps defense stepped up large by holding the Stormy Petrels scoreless until 4:36 remaining in the fourth. Franklin and Warren layups would give Millsaps a 48-45 lead with four minutes to play.
Both teams then traded free throws and layups late into the contest. Novak sank two free throws to push it to a 62-59 advantage with six seconds to go. Oglethorpe would immediately be fouled and convert one-of-two free throws.
Novak would add two more free throws to ice the game and provide a 64-60 Millsaps victory.
