Baseball Falls in SAA Opener at Centre

Majors Will Rematch the Colonels in Game Three at 11 a.m. CT on Sunday

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Millsaps baseball program opened SAA play at Centre College, but fell 8-2 and 3-2 (seven innings) on Saturday.

Game 1: 8-2, L

Senior Wil Wood tallied 4.1 IP and struck out six batters, while allowing just one earned run, two walks and five hits. Sophomore Walker Zepponi finished the last two innings with no runs against and no walks inside Gary Wright Field at Fishman Park.

Seniors Sam Pitre (3-4, one RBI) and Austin Arceneaux (2-4) were strong offensively.

The Majors nearly scored the first run of the game in the fourth when sophomore Bradley Pelle recorded a single to left field. Arceneaux later singled, allowing Pelle to race around third base. Pelle nearly beat the tag, but was called out at home.

Centre came alive with four runs in the fourth before Millsaps responded with a run in the top of the fifth inning. Sophomore Zac Farris singled and reached second on a graduate Chris Hart hit by pitch. Pitre then singled to right field and plated Farris.

The Colonels would add three runs in the sixth to build a 7-1 advantage. Junior Jackson Ware led off the seventh with a walk and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Centre added another run and held for an 8-2 win.

Game 2: 3-2 (7 inn.), L

Pitre (2-3, two runs) was strong again in Game Two. Pelle also batted 1-2 with an RBI. Junior Jackson Hood tossed 5.2 innings, striking out two batters against seven hits, four walks and three earned runs.

Millsaps did strike first in the second contest. Pitre singled and reached third on a junior Case Page double. A wild pitch would allow Pitre to run home.

Centre quickly tied the game at 1-1 with three hits to open their half of the first. A sacrifice fly would bring home the Colonel from third.

Pitre continued his outstanding afternoon with a double in the third. A Page fly out and Pelle RBI single would give the Majors a 2-1 edge.

The Colonels then used a two-run fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead and hung on from there, claiming the second game.

The Majors will now look to take Game Three, which is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. CT on Sunday. Live video and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
