MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Millsaps baseball program swept a pair of foes in the opening days of the Huntingdon Spring Break Tournament at Neal Posey Field. The Majors defeated Hampden-Sydney, 13-8 on Friday and (RV) Middlebury, 9-6 on Saturday.
Game 1: 13-8, W
Senior
Wil Wood captivated with six strikeouts, while only surrendering one run, three hits and four walks in 6.0 innings. Sophomore
Bradley Pelle (3-5, one run) set a career high with seven RBIs, including a three-run homer, while senior
Sam Pitre (3-5, one run) contributed two RBIs.
The Majors buried Hampden-Sydney (6-2) with eight runs in the bottom of the second inning thanks to the first eight batters reaching base successfully. Pelle clobbered a three-run shot to open the scoring.
With the bases loaded, Pitre would plate
Jackson Ware and
David Abbadessa with a single to left field. The sixth run would result from an error, plating Hart. Carrying a 6-0 lead over the Tigers, the Majors responded again with RBI singles from
EJ Ousley as well as
Pelle.
The Tigers would answer in the top of the fourth with a single tally, but the Majors would tally two more runs in the bottom half of the frame with a Pelle double, scoring
Joshua Laurent and
Austin Arceneaux.
Millsaps added another run in the seventh after sophomore
Zac Farris walked and advanced home on a ground out and pair of passed balls. The eighth saw junior
Case Page score on a wild pitch and freshman
Johnny Morreale reached home off a Pelle RBI ground out.
Down 13-1 entering the ninth inning, the Tigers would post seven runs, but it was not enough as Millsaps secured a 13-8 triumph.
Game 2: 9-6, W
Junior
Jackson Hood (5.0 IP, nine strikeouts) and sophomore
Nick Tarantino (4.0 IP, eight strikeouts) combined for an incredible 17 punch outs, while each recording career high totals in the win over (RV) Middlebury (0-1).
Pelle continued his hot streak, going 3-5 with two RBIs. Pitre went 2-4 with two runs, two walks and a stolen base. Ousley was a perfect 4-4 with an RBI and walk.
The Panthers jumped out to a 5-0 advantage through the first two innings of action. Millsaps (7-6) started to get back into its groove in the top of the third. Ware scored Abbadessa with an RBI single, which was followed by a Pelle RBI single and a
Mason Morgan fielder's choice, which brought home Page.
The Majors would grab the lead with three more runs in fourth inning to take a 6-5 advantage. With the bases loaded, Pitre would get things started by scoring on a wild pitch. Ware would then ground out to plate
Chris Hart, and Pelle brought home Pitre on a single, who had advanced to third base.
In the bottom of the sixth, Pitre would promptly single and steal second base. Ware would plate his teammate with a double to left field with two outs.
Millsaps scored another run in the seventh after Morgan led the inning with a walk. A single and ground out moved him to third base where an Abbadessa RBI ground out pushed Morgan home.
Middlebury answered for a run in the bottom of the seventh, cutting the deficit to 8-6. The Majors posted the final run of the game following a Ware hit by pitch, Pelle single and Ousley RBI single.
Tarantino shut the door on any comeback attempt with two strikeouts in the bottom of the eighth as well as a strike out and pair of pop ups in the ninth.
The Majors will conclude their stay in Alabama and look to sweep the weekend as the face host Huntingdon College, beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Live video and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
