PEARL, Miss. – A quartet of Millsaps baseball pitchers combined to cool off the Belhaven Blazers and even the Cowboy Maloney Series with a 4-2 win at Trustmark Park on Tuesday.
The victory sets up a winner-take-all Game Three at Twenty Field, beginning at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 28.
Freshman
Stewart Bonnecaze tallied four innings pitched with five strikeouts, two walks, no hits and one run against. Junior
Graham Harrison then held the Blazers in two innings pitched scoreless with a strikeout and walk. Sophomore
Nick Tarantino held down the seventh and eighth innings before senior
Wil Wood tallied a scoreless ninth-inning save.
A total of seven Majors recorded a hit, while graduate
Chris Hart finished with an RBI-triple and scored a run. Senior
Sam Pitre and freshman
EJ Ousley also recorded RBIs.
The Blazers opened the game with a runner on third in the first inning after a walk and pair of steals, but were held off the scoreboard.
Millsaps broke through in the top of the third. Junior
Jackson Ware led off the frame with a single and advanced to third off a sophomore
Zac Farris hit and Hart induced error. Pitre then singled home Ware for the first run of the game.
Belhaven tied up the contest in the bottom of the fourth, but Bonnecaze got out of a jam after the first two batters reached scoring position. Only one run came across as the Blazers tallied an RBI fly out and back-to-back infield pop ups.
The fifth inning saw the Majors come to life and put three runs on the board for a 4-1 advantage. Farris reached on an error and raced to third base, scoring senior
Branyan Bounds from first. Hart then electrified the Major faithful in attendance and the dugout as he tripled to score Farris. A couple batters later, Ousley pushed home Hart with a heads-up, RBI bunt single.
The Blazers then put runners on the corners, but were snuffed out in their half of the fifth. Stellar defense continued as Ware made a fantastic diving stretch to open the sixth.
Belhaven would spoil the no-hit bid with the first batter in the eighth off a leadoff double. An ensuing single and wild pitch made it a 4-2 deficit. With a runner on second, the Blazers were doubled up courtesy of a Farris pop-up catch and toss to Ousley at second base.
Wood entered for the save in the ninth. The inning started with a ground out and single. A fly out put the Majors on the brink and they finished the job by catching a runner in a pickle.
The Majors open SAA action as they travel for a three-game series at Centre College. Game One is set for 11 a.m. CT first pitch on Saturday. Live video and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
