ATLANTA – Millsaps baseball senior pitcher
Wil Wood dominated to shut out No. 1 Birmingham-Southern, 2-0 at Twenty Field over the weekend. Wood was named the Southern Athletic Association Baseball Pitcher of the Week following his efforts, the league office announced on Monday.
Wood held No. 1 Birmingham-Southern scoreless in a 2-0 victory with seven complete innings. He struck out six Panthers, while only surrendering three hits and walking two batters.
It was the first victory for the Majors over the No. 1 team in NCAA Division III since March of 2017.
Wood, a member of the 2022 All-SAA First Team and 2021 All-SAA Second Team, is no stranger to beating ranked teams. The Memphis, Tenn., product was named SAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 15, 2021 as a sophomore after defeating then-No. 25 Hendrix, 2-0. He pitched five scoreless frames with six strikeouts, two hits against and two walks.
He currently ranks in the top three across the conference in innings pitched (50.0 IP), strikeouts (46 K), strikeouts looking (12 KL), opposing batting average (0.216), doubles allowed (one) and wins (5-2).
Millsaps is now scheduled to begin an eight-game road trip, starting at Huntingdon in Montgomery, Ala., on Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. with live video and live stats available at gomajors.com.
