Baseball, Softball Combine for Eight on College Sports Communicators Academic All-District® Teams

Academic All-District® Teams Austin Arceneaux, Chris Hart, Sam Pitre, Wil Wood, Hannah Derouen, Brianna Newman, Delta Newman, Molli Perry were Recognized

AUSTIN, Texas – A total of eight Millsaps baseball and softball student-athletes earned spots on the 2023 CSC Academic All-District® Baseball and Softball Teams, the College Sports Communicators announced on Tuesday.
 
For baseball, senior Austin Arceneaux, graduate Chris Hart, senior Sam Pitre and senior Wil Wood were recognized, while senior Hannah Derouen, junior Brianna Newman, senior Delta Claire Newman and junior Molli Perry made the list for softball.
 
The 2023 Academic All-District® Baseball Teams and the 2023 Academic All-District® Softball Teams shine a light on the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes baseball and softball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
 
Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second and third-team Academic All- America® honorees will be announced June 6 for softball and June 7 for baseball.
 
Arceneaux received his Government and Politics degree on Saturday, May 13 with a 3.9 grade point average.
 
He was named to the All-SAA First Team and currently ranks fourth in the conference with a .372 batting average. The catcher is third with an impressive 15 caught-stealing attempts. The native of Rayne, La., also tallied 51 hits, 19 RBIs and two home runs.

Additionally, he has been named to the SAA Academic Honor Roll three times thus far, was both the president of the Government & Politics Club and the Millsaps SAAC, a lobbyist intern for the Picard Group in Lafayette, La., and twice made Club 40 with a 4.0 GPA.
 
Hart earned his undergraduate Biochemistry degree with a near flawless 3.99 GPA and currently holds a 4.0 GPA in pursuit of his MBA. The third baseman, who was a member of 2021-22 CoSIDA Academic All-District® Baseball Team, is on track to obtain his masters this summer.

The Brandon, Miss., product was recently tabbed to the All-SAA Team for the second straight season and was 2022 D3baseball.com All-Region.

After starting all 45 games, he holds the fifth-most doubles (13), seventh-most hits and the third-highest total of HBPs (11) in the SAA. He batted .315 with 41 runs scored, 28 RBIs, 25 walks and recorded a team-best 12 stolen bases and was tied with three homers..

Hart was a member of the Purple and White (school publication), the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society, SAA Academic Honor Roll (four times), a Millsaps College undergraduate research assistant, McNeely Plastics quality tech, Millsaps baseball camp helper and conducted a research project with Kramer Organic Chemistry Lab Group and was twice named to Club 40 thus far.
 
Pitre earned his degree in Organic Chemistry with a 3.53 GPA after appearing on the All-SAA Team for the third time. He was named to the 2023 All-SAA Second Team, 2022 Honorable Mention and 2021 All-SAA First Team.

The left fielder is currently tied atop the SAA with 33 walks and is fifth with a .477 on-base percentage.

The Opelousas, La., product led the team with 57 hits (fifth in SAA) and was second with 40 runs and 28 RBIs. Among the conference, Pitre sits tenth with a .356 batting average and he has already been named to the SAA Academic Honor Roll three times.

On campus, he conducted undergraduate chemistry research and was involved with the SAACS. Pitre plans to attend graduate school for Synthetic Chemistry.

Wood was steady on the mound throughout the season. He secured a Business Administration
degree with a 3.7 GPA.
 
He leads the conference with 76.1 innings pitched and was named 2023 All-SAA Honorable Mention. Wood ranks second in the SAA with a 7-5 mark, added a save and three complete games.

Wood made the First Team in 2022 and Second Team in 2021. The Memphis, Tenn., product posted the fifth-most strikeouts (60), seventh-most strikeouts looking (16) and sixth-lowest opponent batting average at .249.

He garnered SAA Pitcher of the Week recognition on April 3 after shutting out then-No. 1 BSC in seven complete innings. Wood made the SAA Academic Honor Roll on three occasions and was a part of the Kappa Alpha Order.

Derouen double majored in Neuroscience and Anthropology with a solid 3.92 GPA.

She was the 2023 Carla D. Webb Award recipient as the top Millsaps senior female student-athlete as well as a 2023 and 2021 All-SAA Honorable Mention pitcher.

The Lake Charles, La., native ranks third in the SAA in innings pitched (111.2 IP), fourth in strikeouts (73) and fifth in ERA (3.76). Additionally, Derouen is sixth in wins (seven) and both seventh in opposing batting average (.309) and strikeouts looking (18).

A three-time member of the SAA Academic Honor Roll, she is also a four-time SAA Pitcher of the Week.

Campus experiences included traveling as a forensic lab technician for six weeks in Oxkutzcab, Yucatán, Mexico for the Millsaps Puuc Archeological Research Center (MPARC).

She was also involved with Phi Eta Sigma, Nu Rho Psi, Psi Chi, Lambda Alpha, Tri Beta, SOAN Club, Psychology Club, FCA, Enable America, Club 40 as well as an Easton and NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete. She plans to attend graduate school for Biological Anthropology.

Brianna Newman is a junior currently majoring in Psychology with a 3.85 GPA. She was the SAA Player of the Week on Feb. 13 after batting 9-for-14 with 10 RBIs in a four-game sweep versus Austin College.

The Hammond, La., standout played first base, was a designated player after injury and pitched.

Having been on the SAA Academic Honor Roll twice so far, she intends to obtain a Master's of Science in Nursing.
 
Brianna appeared in 27 of 38 games with a team-high. 339 batting average. She posted 21 hits, 14 RBIs and six stolen bases.

Delta Claire Newman earned her Biology with a 3.56 GPA. She was named to the 2023 All-SAA Softball Tournament Team and SAA Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 13.

Newman found herself on the SAA Academic Honor Roll twice thus far as a transfer student and was the Molly Tyner Boland Award recipient for showing the most altruistic spirit on the team.

The Eupora, Miss., graduate plans to attend nursing school at University of Mississippi Medical Center to obtain a BSN. Lastly, she made Club 40 with a perfect 4.0 semester in the fall of 2022.
 
The final student-athlete to secure 2023 CSC Academic All-District® Team recognition was Perry. Perry earned a spot on the All-SAA First Team for the second consecutive season. She holds a 3.99 GPA and is working toward her degree in Business Administration.

The Kaplan, La., center fielder also was the 2022 SAA Player of the Year and was on the 2021 SAA Second Team. Perry was one of three Majors to start all 38 games and paces the league with 22 walks.

She also currently ranks second with 23 stolen bases, sixth in runs scored with 30 and is seventh with a .439 OBP. Perry led the Majors with 36 hits and two home runs to go along with a .330 batting average.

Perry has made the SAA Academic Honor Roll twice and Club 40 in the fall. Off the field, she was an assistant coach with LA Slam Softball, a member of Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, was the Omicron Delta Kappa First-Year Student of the Year, a Presidential Scholar, the Chi Omega President, an ELSEWORKS business intern, Government and Politics Club secretary, Presidential Ambassador and was involved with FCA.
