JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps women's soccer team took care of business as they opened the 2023 season with a strong, 3-0 victory against Huntingdon at Harper Davis Field on Friday.
Graduate
Mary Ranager netted home two headers with both coming off corner kick assists sent in by fifth year
Riley Ely.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Emily Lozano tallied five saves for her fifth career shutout. Sophomore
Alexa Dubrow scored her first collegiate goal to provide insurance in the second half. The Majors outshot the Hawks, 20-14 with a 9-5 shots on goal advantage.
Millsaps nearly score in the second minute when freshman
Becca Quick hit the crossbar for the match's first chance.
Ranager netted the first goal in the 21st minute off a curling Ely corner. Ranager found space and sent the ball downward and into the back of the net.
Huntingdon sent their own try off the crossbar just seven minutes, but the score held in Millsaps' favor. Lozano would make a dazzling save with two minutes remaining in the half from a chance out front. She would dive to her left and corral the chance.
Ranager and Ely would connect again on another corner connection and build a 2-0 lead one minute after intermission.
The Hawks followed with a few shots toward net, but the Majors powerful defense kept the chances at bay.
Sophomore
Eliza Maria McMillian crossed the ball across and Dubrow buried the open shot in the upper corner to make it a 3-0 edge in the 65th minute.
Huntingdon would continue building pressure with five shot attempts the reminder of the contest, but the Majors would respond to carry home a 3-0, season-opening shutout.
