Volleyball Knocks Down Huntingdon and Dallas in Invitational Finales

Majors Swept the Hawks, Bested the Crusaders in Four Sets on Saturday

JACKSON, MISS. The Millsaps women's volleyball team completed a perfect 3-0 weekend in its own Millsaps Invitational by besting Huntingdon, 3-0 and the University of Dallas, 3-1 inside the Hangar Dome on Saturday. The Majors earlier beat Belhaven as well in three sets on Friday.
 
Match 1: Millsaps 3, Huntingdon 0
(25-8, 25-20, 25-9)
 
Sophomore Ally Baer led Millsaps with seven kills, while classmate Mallory Richardson and junior Anna Capezzera recorded six kills each. Capezzera added 11 digs, while senior Margaret Richardson posted 17 digs and junior Zoe Elder added 25 assists.
 
Senior Brenna Macaluso recorded her 500th career kill in the match.
 
Huntingdon held an early 5-3 lead, but the Majors surged ahead for the next 11 points. With Millsaps leading 16-8, a Mallory Richardson kill would spark a 9-0 finish to set one.
 
The Hawks utilized a 5-0 run to control an early 10-6 advantage in set two. Knotted up at 15-15, Baer would use a kill and team up on a block to spark a crucial 3-0 run to regain the lead.
 
The Majors held unto a 21-20 edge later on before kills by Macaluso, senior Ashlyn Moore as well as Mallory Richardson helped close the set at 25-20.
 
Huntingdon held a brief 3-2 advantage in the third set, but the Majors pushed ahead with a pair of 5-0 runs. A final 5-0 rush to close the match was powered by a Moore and Baer kill. Millsaps won the final set, 25-9 to earn the sweep.
 
 
Match 2: Millsaps 3, Dallas 1
(25-21, 25-15, 23-25, 25-13)
 
The second and final match of Saturday saw Capezzera record her fifth double-double of the season with a career-high 19 kills along with 16 digs. Elder registered 41 assists and 17 digs, while Macaluso finished with eight kills and 18 digs. Baer nearly reached double figures with nine kills.
 
The Majors would trail 15-14 midway through set one, but power forward with six consecutive points. The remainder of the set would seesaw back and forth with Capezzera finishing the set off at 25-21 with a kill.
 
Set two saw the Majors burst into a 4-0 lead over the Crusaders. Then another Capezzera kill pushed the Majors ahead, 10-2.

Dallas tried to come back with a few kills but a resilient Millsaps squad pulled out a 25-15, set two win over the Crusaders.
 
Set three was a back-and-forth struggle with the Crusaders leading 18-15. Millsaps would score the next five points, but Dallas closed the set on a 10-5 run, winning 25-23.
 
The Majors battled for a 13-11 advantage in the fourth set, but exploded for an 8-0 burst to take control. A Capezzera kill and two Dallas attack errors gave Millsaps a 25-13 victory in set four.
 
Capezzera was named to the Millsaps Volleyball Invitational All-Tournament Team following the match.
