BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Millsaps volleyball team (6-5, 0-1 SAA) put up a fight, but fell in three sets to Birmingham-Southern (5-7, 1-0 SAA) in the SAA opener on Wednesday. The Majors were bested 25-20, 25-21, 25-22 inside the Bill Battle Coliseum.
Junior
Zoe Elder tallied a double-double with 16 assists and 14 digs. Classmate
Anna Capezzera recorded eight kills and 10 digs. Senior
Margaret Richardson led both sides with 19 digs.
The Panthers raced to a 13-6 start in the match, but Capezzera would answer back with a kill early on. BSC would later lead 24-16 before a furious 4-0 rally cut the deficit to 24-20. However, the hosts held on by recording a kill on the very next rally.
The second set was incredibly close with six ties and four lead changes. After several momentum swings and lead changes, Millsaps pulled out front 18-14. The Panthers would claw back into the set with an ensuing 3-0 and 5-0 run to go ahead, 23-20. A service error tightened the score, but back-to-back Panther kills ended the set at 25-21.
Set three was even more competitive, featuring eight ties and three lead changes. Giving the confidence needed to fight back in the match, the Majors immediately took a 6-2 lead. The Panthers would crawl back into a 9-9 and 19-19 tie. BSC would score the next four points to pull and earn the win in three close sets, 25-22.
