Millsaps Football Drops Offensive Shootout to Hendrix, 53-42

Gray Jennings Throws for 418 Yards, Scores Six Times; Temias Mason Tallies 192 Receiving Yards in Defeat

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps football team handled business offensively and etched their names in the program record book, but came up short to Hendrix, 53-42 at Harper Davis Field on Saturday.

Rising freshman Gray Jennings led the way with 418 passing yards (19-of-36, two interceptions) and six total touchdowns (five passing, one rushing). The 418 passing yards are the fourth-most in a single game in program history, and five passing touchdowns ranks tied for second through the air.

Senior wideout Temias Mason hauled in four passes for a jaw-dropping 192 receiving yards and two scores. Mason's 192 receiving yards also rank sixth in Millsaps College football, single-game history.

Junior Connor Ladner recorded 65 yards and added a touchdown. Sophomore Joshua Richardson rushed for 44 yards on seven attempts and grabbed two completions for 21 yards and a score. Freshman Tae Hills secured his first collegiate catch and touchdown, while adding 56 yards on two returns.

Defensively, sophomore Nehemiah Coalson totaled nine tackles and one quarterback hurry. Freshman Jeremiah Hall corralled six tackles (0.5 TFL) and one breakup. Senior James Christy finished with five tackles and a forced fumble.

Junior Ethan Klapatch sailed four punts for a total of 221 yards, with three going 50-plus yards.

Hendrix opened action with a 16-yard passing touchdown two minutes in. The Majors only needed one play to answer when Jennings found Mason with a deep ball for a 65-yard catch and score. The Warriors regained the lead on an ensuing 10-play scoring drive.

However, the Majors used only two plays to tie the game again at 14-14, with a Richardson reception midway through the first quarter.

Hendrix would score twice before the end of the first quarter, but be held to 13 points on a botched snap. The Warriors would score twice more before halftime and fail on a two-point try, leading 40-14 at intermission.

With the visitors out front 46-14 following a blocked PAT, the Majors would attempt a valiant comeback effort.

Jennings found Hills from nine yards out, would score himself with a three-yard rush before Hendrix answered with a one-yard rushing touchdown five minutes into the fourth quarter.

Not giving up, Jennings connected with Mason on a 63-yard touchdown completion to make it a 53-35 game only 50 seconds later.

Then with just over a minute to play after stout defensive play late, Jennings found Ladner for a 46-yard touchdown. Hendrix would recover the ensuing onside kick and hold on for a 53-42 win.

The Majors will next travel to Birmingham, Ala. to face Birmingham-Southern on Saturday, Sept. 30. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. with live video and live stats provided at gomajors.com.
