Men’s Basketball Falls in Heartbreaker at Oglethorpe, 62-61

Devin Harris Tallies 17 Points, Dakota Gasca Nets 13 Points in Even Contest on Friday

ATLANTA – The Millsaps men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to Oglethorpe, 62-61 inside the Dorough Field House on Friday.

Freshman Devin Harris contributed a team-high 17 points and added five rebounds and a steal.

Sophomore Dakota Gasca put in a gritty effort by playing all 40 minutes with 13 points, a season-high seven rebounds, career-high five steals and added an assist.

Junior Nicholas Ughovwa nearly brought home a double-double with nine points, nine rebounds, a steal and a block.

Millsaps (5-12, 4-3 SAA) outshot Oglethorpe (8-8, 5-1 SAA) from the floor 37.3 percent to 34.5 percent. However, the Stormy Petrels made the difference up from long range, outshooting the Majors 27 percent to 11.8 percent. Millsaps was able to dominate inside with a 42-18 points-in-the-paint margin.

Junior Drew Roth connected with a floating trey to gave the Majors their first lead at 5-2.

Oglethorpe responded and built its largest lead of the half to 22-15 following an 8-2 burst. However, the Majors battled back as Ursin tied the game at 25-25 following a pair of free throws.

Ursin then used a turnaround hook shot to give Millsaps a 31-30 lead. Oglethorpe added a free throw of their own to make it 31-31 all heading into intermission.

An Ursin jumper just beyond the charity stripe made it 33-32 to start the second half.

Oglethorpe then created a pair of five-point leads in the opening minutes of play. Millsaps answered when Harris tallied a layup and sophomore Devin Bass stepped back and connected from long range to tie the game at 44-44 with 11:04 remaining.

Bass later found Harris all alone under the hoop for the easy layup, giving Millsaps the lead once more at 48-47. Ughovwa then dialed in an and-one conversion moments later to grow the advantage to four points.

The Stormy Petrels fought to regain the lead at 58-53 with 4:07 to go courtesy off an 11-2 run, which featured three treys.

A Harris layup and Gasca drive to the hoop would cut the deficit down to 58-57 moments later. Oglethorpe would convert two free throws before Harris tied the game back up at 60-60 with a crucial and-one conversion with 1:54 to play.

The teams missed a flurry of shots down the stretch before the Stormy Petrels grabbed a defensive rebound and netted a pair of free throws following a loose ball foul.

Gasca would then score one of two free throws to make it a 62-61 Oglethorpe lead. The second shot resulted in a held ball with the possession arrow pointing in the Majors' favor.

Following a timeout with 1.5 seconds remaining, a Bass 3-point attempt just missed by hitting the rim.

The Majors return to action in Georgia and will face Berry College on Sunday, beginning at 2 p.m. CT. Live video and live stats will be provided at gomajors.com.
