Women’s Basketball Vanquishes Oglethorpe, 81-57 in Dominant Win on Friday

Helena Roe Totals 17 Points as Majors Remain Unbeaten in League Action

ATLANTA – The Millsaps women's basketball team maintained its unblemished SAA record on the court by taking down Oglethorpe, 81-57 inside the Dorough Field House on Friday.
 
Senior and Madison, Miss., native Helena Roe led the Majors in scoring with a season-high 17 points, while contributing three rebounds and one steal on defense.

Junior Haley Franklin finished with 15 points, six assists and five rebounds alongside three steals and two blocks on defense.

Sophomore Elyse Warren recorded her seveth double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds to go along with a block. The Memphis, Tenn., product now has garnered five double-doubles over her last seven games.
 
Classmate Whitney Novak set off with 11 points, three assists, six rebounds and a block and one steal. Freshman Garin Freeman posted 13 points, five rebounds and tied a career-high six assists.
 
Millsaps (16-2, 7-0 SAA) ruled Oglethorpe (10-7, 2-4 SAA) with a 40-16 margin in points from the paint and saw the bench outscore the Stormy Petrels, 28-20.
 
The Majors held Oglethorpe to 27.5 percent (19-of-69) from the field and connected on 49.2 percent (30-of-61) of their own chances.
 
Following the first quarter on the court, both teams saw the lead exchange back and forth with physical basketball on both ends.
 
The Stormy Petrels would bank a 3-pointer with 3:55 remaining to go up by seven points at 13-6. Freeman would pull off a layup inside the paint to spark a 10-0 rally. The help of Warren layup, a pair of Freeman layups and Roe 3-pointer would give Millsaps a 17-13 early cushion.
 
Millsaps oversaw the court and used Adams to score inside the paint with 28 seconds left and Roe would finish the rest from behind the arch to give the Majors a four-point lead of 22-18 to end the first quarter.
 
In the second quarter, Roe started off where she finished by adding an additional consecutive 3-pointers. Millsaps would finish the contest 34.8 percent (8-of-23) from beyond the arch.
 
Novak would step in with a trey to grow the advantage to eight before Freeman would net another layup at 6:48 to give the Majors a double-digit lead.
 
Franklin would continue the 10-0 run with a layup inside the paint following a couple Novak free-throw makes. Franklin would go to the line moments later to give the Majors the largest lead of the quarter at 38-23.
 
The Stormy Petrels took on one last shot at the line on a three-point play to go into halftime trailing, 39-28.
 
The Stormy Petrels fell further and further behind as Franklin, Roe, Novak, Warren and Freeman where all instrumental in tallying points. The margin grew to 22 points before Oglethorpe ended the third quarter down, 62-44.
 
In the fourth quarter, scoring continued to take a toll on the Stormy Petrels. With 8:52 remaining, Roe would garnish a 3-pointer to extend the lead back up to 20.
 
A Freeman layup would make the score 79-54, giving Millsaps its largest advantage of the evening. Freshman Bailey Johnson would end the game for the Majors at the line with two free-throws conversions to down Oglethorpe, 81-57.
 
The Majors will be back in action on Sunday as they travel to face Berry, beginning at 12 p.m. CT.
