Men’s Basketball Takes Down Oglethorpe in Rematch, 69-61

Freshman Devin Harris Garnered 16 Points, 16 Rebounds in Friday Night Triumph

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps men's basketball team offered a strong response, downing Oglethorpe by a score of 69-61 in a Friday rematch inside the Hangar Dome. The Majors avenged a one-point loss a week prior in Atlanta.

Freshman Devin Harris electrified with his first collegiate double-double, which featured 16 points, a career-high 16 rebounds and four assists.

Sophomore Rodney Phillips Jr. generated 12 points and three rebounds, while freshman Cameron Lumar netted 11 points and three boards as well.

Junior Nicholas Ughovwa (10 points, six rebounds, two assists, one steal, one block) and sophomore Dakota Gasca (six points, five assists, one rebound, one steal) also had strong all-around showings.

Millsaps (6-13, 5-4 SAA) bettered Oglethorpe (8-10, 5-3 SAA) in bench points (35-6), second-chance points (17-10) and inside the paint (36-24). The Majors also outshot the Stormy Petrels 43.1 percent (28-of-65) to 35.5 percent (22-of-62).

Oglethorpe jumped out to an early 4-0 margin for its only lead of the contest. Millsaps stormed back for the next 12 points, which was punctuated by a Lumar trey.

The Stormy Petrels would scratch back to close the deficit to five points with two minutes left in the half. However, junior Drew Roth closed the half with a full-court pass that Lumar laid up and in as time expired. Millsaps held a 34-27 edge at intermission.

Following Harris, Phillips Jr. and Gasca baskets, the Majors grew their advantage to 48-34 with 12:39 to play.

The visitors battled back to make it a six-point gap, but eventually fell behind by 14 points again courtesy of back-to-back Harris layups. The New Orleans, La., product sealed the game with under five minutes to play scoring 17 seconds apart.

Harris and Gasca officially sealed the contest with four flawless free-throw makes in the final minute as the Majors earned a hard-fought win, 69-61.

Millsaps returns to the Hangar Dome for another rematch within a week and will battle Berry on Sunday, beginning at 3 p.m. Live video and live stats will be provided at gomajors.com.
