JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps women's basketball team looked unbeatable on the court as they took down Oglethorpe, 66-46 while remaining undefeated inside the Hangar Dome on Friday. The Majors started 10-0 at home for the first time since the 2018-19 season.
Millsaps (17-3, 8-1 SAA) look well preparted over Oglethorpe (11-8, 3-5 SAA) with a 17-1 advantage in fast-break points, 33-10 coming off the bench and 30-24 in points from the paint. The Stormy Petrels outscored the Majors, 15-12 in second-chance points and shot 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from the field in the third quarter to make things interesting briefly.
Sophomore Elyse Warren led the Majors in scoring with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while adding one assist for her sixth double-double in the last nine games. The Memphis, Tenn., native posted two steals on defense while shooting 6-of-9 from the free-throw line.
Junior Haley Franklin was another key factor in the Majors' win as she tallied 14 points, three assists and one steal on defense while grabbing two rebounds.
Classmate Helena Roe of Madison, Miss. posted 12 points with one steal on defense while shooting 3-of-5 from 3-point range and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line.
Freshman Garin Freeman added 10 points while finishing with a career-high seven assists, four steals and three rebounds on defense. She also shot 6-of-8 from the foul stripe to help the Majors win over Oglethorpe.
In the first quarter Oglethorpe took a 3-1 lead early on, but Majors would soon crawl back as Roe arched a 3-pointer to give Millsaps their first lead with 6:56 remaining in the first quarter. Millsaps would never trail from that point on.
Both teams would swap points back and forth before Warren would finish strong with a layup courtesy of a nifty feed from Freeman, growing the Millsaps edge to 16-7. Senior Maddie Howell later assisted a Warren layup to end the first quarter out front, 21-9.
In the opening moments of the second quarter, Oglethorpe continued to trail as Roe sank a trey to carry the Majors ahead, 24-11. Franklin would step in at the free-throw line to give the Majors a 25-15 edge moments later. The Majors scored the following six points to build a 16-point distance with 3:21 to play in the second quarter.
Freeman free throws as well as Warren and freshman Tia Anderson layups would push Millsaps into halftime ahead by a comfortable 33-17 margin.
However Oglethorpe came alinve in the third quarter. The visitors were held to single digits offensively in three of the four quarters, but would tally 21 in the third to provide brief resistance. The Stormy Petrels would lock in as they used a 16-4 run to open the half and trail, 37-33.
Oglethorpe would shorten the margin to four with two minutes on the scoreboard, but junior Whitney Novak knocked down a crucial 3-pointer at 1:39 to give the Majors momentum back.
The fourth quarter saw Millsaps step up by shooting 84.6 percent (11-of-13) from the free-throw line to keep the Stormy Petrels at bay.
With 6:53 to play, Franklin gave the Majors a 14-point lead and junior Taylor Frank propelled the Majors ahead, 61-45 midway through the final frame. Roe, Freeman and freshman Nya Miller would help the Majors with five free throws to finish off the Stormy Petrels in the end.
Millsaps would take down Oglethorpe, 66-46 to get their 10th home victory of the season.
