Men’s Basketball Takes Down Defending SAA Tournament Champ, 83-71

Majors Score Efficiently, Control Paint in Victory over Sewanee on Friday

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps men's basketball team responded well in their 2024 home opener, downing Sewanee by a score of 83-71 inside the Hangar Dome on Sunday.

Sewanee (5-8, 1-1 SAA), who won the SAA Tournament crown last season, was outshot 51.7 percent (30-of-58) to 38.7 percent (24-of-62).

Millsaps (3-10, 2-1 SAA) also held advantages in the paint (42-20) and off the bench (45-15).

Sophomore Dakota Gasca netted a career-high 20 points (10-13 FT) to go along with three assists, two steals and three rebounds.

Freshman Cameron Lumar recorded his first collegiate double-double with 14 points and a personal high of 13 boards. He also dished out a game-high six assists and grabbed a pair of steals.

Both sophomore Rodney Phillips Jr. (four rebounds) and junior Nicholas Ughovwa (two steals, one block) chipped in 10 points each. Sophomore Mack Gorton tied a career-best nine points, while junior Drew Roth hauled down nine rebounds.

The teams would trade the lead seven times in the opening six minutes of play. However, the Majors would gain the lead at 14-12 following an emphatic Gorton and-one conversion and would never trial again.

Millsaps methodically grew its margin to 41-27 just before intermission courtesy of a late Gasca trey. The Majors connected on 38.5 percent of their long-range chances in the game (5-of-13).

Gasca two minutes prior also tallied all three free throws after getting fouled beyond the arc.

The Tigers cut the deficit down to 10 points four minutes into the second half before Gorton used a spinning layup in the lane to allude defenders, sparking a 25-7 march for a 10-minute span.

Sewanee battled back to close down the 28-point deficit, trailing 72-44 with six minutes to play. However, the Majors held resilient and secured the 83-71 SAA victory.

Millsaps next hosts Centre College, beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Live video and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
