Men’s Basketball Scares off Centre, 86-81 in Home Victory

Quintet of Majors Posted Double Figures Offensively Led by Cameron Lumar’s 20-Point Outing on Sunday

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps men's basketball team pulled off their second home victory of the weekend by holding off Centre, 86-81 inside the Hangar Dome on Sunday.
 
Millsaps (4-10, 3-1 SAA) outscored the Colonels 38-32 in the paint, 25-18 in bench points, while also leading 17-7 in fast breaks.
 
Centre (5-9, 0-3 SAA) was also unable to stop the Majors from getting to and succeeding from the free-throw line, who shot 81.2 percent (18-of-22).
 
Freshman Cameron Lumar led the Majors with a career-best 20 points to along with seven assists and two rebounds.
 
Sophomore Rodney Phillips Jr. finished with a season-high 16 points, seven rebounds while adding a steal. Junior Drew Roth accumulated 12 points, eight rebounds and three assists, while shooting 3-of-3 from the free throw line.
 
Sophomore Dakota Gasca posted 12 points, six assists, seven rebounds and three steals, while junior Nicholas Ughovwa generated 10 points alongside six rebounds, two assists and a steal in the win.
 
In the first half, Millsaps built an impress 23-7 lead, but Centre would soon use a 14-2  run to crawl back into the game, trailing 25-2.
 
At 4:50 remaining in the half, Roth would use a jumper inside the paint to push his team back up to an 11-point margin. A Gasca trey would send the Majors into halftime leading 44-37.
 
In the second half, Roth scored eight of the first nine Millsaps points, including three straight free throws to make it 53-40 with 16:51 left in the half.
 
Centre would pull back within six with 11:30 on the clock with a jumper. The Colonels would decrease the lead by two with six minutes to go. Millsaps would respond with an 8-2 burst to gain valuable breathing room late.
 
Both teams would fight to the last whistle and Millsaps would use a pair of Lumar free throws to ice the game and get their second consecutive home win by downing Centre, 81-68.
