JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps women's basketball team came out victorious in a battle of two SAA-undefeated teams inside the Hangar Dome on Sunday. The Majors outside and free-throw shooting was the difference in a 69-58 victory over Centre College.
Junior
Haley Franklin recorded her second consecutive 30-point contest with a season-high 33 points on 11-of-19 shooting. She added six rebounds and an assist on 3-of-3 shooting from long range and 8-of-12 efficiency from the free-throw line.
Sophomore
Elyse Warren generated her fifth double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds to go along with a steal. Additionally, freshman
Garin Freeman had another strong all-around outing with eight points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Millsaps (13-2, 4-0 SAA) controlled the paint (38-26) and showed their bench depth once more (24-10).
Centre (11-3, 2-1 SAA) outshot the Majors from the field 45.5 percent (25-of-55) to 40.3 percent (25-of-62). However, Millsaps did more damage from the beyond the arc (27.8 percent; 5-of-18) and free-throw line (73.7 percent; 14-of-19).
The teams traded the lead six times and were tied five times in the first quarter. A Franklin 3-pointer with just over a minute to play in the opening quarter made it 15-12 and gave Millsaps the lead for good. She added another trey moments later to give the Majors a 18-12 advantage after 10 minutes of action.
Senior
Maddie Howell capped off a 10-0 run with a 3-pointer of her own, beginning the second quarter.
The Colonels cut the advantage down to two points on two occasions, but Millsaps held tough and entered intermission out front, 32-27.
Franklin then scored 11 consecutive Millsaps points, which was polished off by a strong three-point play midway into the third quarter. The Baton Rouge, La., product closed the frame with a jumper, giving Millsaps a 53-46 margin with 10 minutes remaining.
Centre and the Majors exchanged baskets throughout the fourth quarter before Roe and Franklin were able to ice the game away with four consecutive free-throw makes. Millsaps controlled the Colonels for a crucial midseason SAA win, 69-58.
