DANVILLE, Ky. – The Millsaps men's soccer team was bettered by Centre College, 3-1 at Amend Soccer Field on Sunday.
Junior
Sam Cagle led the way for the Majors with a goal scored, converting his lone shot attempt.
Freshmen
Drew Mckeithen and
Alden Romano both accumulated two shot attempts and one shot on goal, while classmate
Kaleb Wilkins finished the evening with one shot try.
Centre (9-2-2, 1-1-1 SAA) outshot the Majors, 20-6 in total shots (8-3 on target) and claimed a narrow 6-4 lead in corner kicks.
Junior goalkeeper
Michael Hamauei recorded five saves in the contest.
In the fifth minute of the first half, Millsaps would see a close missed kick by Mckeithen over the crossbar after two early corner kicks
.
At the 13th minute, Hamauei would block a shot targeted for the middle of goal.
A couple minutes later Centre would see three chances miss from deep in Major territory.
In the 27th minute, a shot by Romano would be blocked following a free kick.
However, Centre shot would be denied off target moments later and would see another Centre shot sail over the crossbar in the 35th minute.
The Colonels finally broke the stalemate courtesy of a header inside the box to move ahead, 1-0 in the 39th minute.
Millsaps would end the first half with a goal kick as Centre would hold a one score advantage going into halftime.
Early in the second half Millsaps would block two consecutive kicks by the Colonels. In the 53rd minute, Hamauei would collect a goalkeeper save.
However, the Colonels would come back around to score their second goal of the match three minutes later.
Centre would expand their lead to 3-0 in the 60th minute.
Millsaps would finally gain their luck as Cagle worked to turn the matchup around for his teammates.
The Olive Branch, Miss., native scored his second goal of the season in the 76th minute following a kick inside the lower left of the goal.
Only two minutes later Romano would find room at the bottom of Centre territory to almost give the Majors their second tally of the match. Wilkins followed with a shot that went wide in the 79th minute for the final Major attempt.
Centre would hold on for a 3-1 decision in Kentucky on Sunday.
