Men’s Soccer Takes Down SAA Top-Seed Berry, 1-0

Ellis Dykes Scores as Majors Shut Out Vikings on Friday

JACKSON, Miss.  The Millsaps men's soccer team got the job done by downing Southern Athletic Association leader Berry College, 1-0 at Harper Davis Field on Friday.

Freshman Ellis Dykes led the way for the Majors with the lone goal of the contest and two shots attempts.

Junior Fisher DeCamp recorded an assist on the goal scored in the thrilling matchup to help give Millsaps (3-8-2, 1-4 SAA) the victory.

Freshmen Kaleb Wilkins and Dawson Alexandre as well as junior Hogan Payne all registered one shot against the Vikings.

Berry (6-4-5, 2-1-2 SAA) outnumbered the Majors in total shots taken at 14-5 and a 4-1 advantage on corner kicks.

However, junior goalkeeper Michael Hamauei (three saves) and freshman Alden Davenport (one save) combined to shutout the Viking offense. Davenport entered the contest with 11:26 to play to preserve the triumph and earn the first win over the Vikings since 2016.

Berry looked to collect their first score of the matchup, but saw a missed opportunity in the 13th minute with a kick sailing over the crossbar.

In the 16th minute and 18th minutes, the Vikings were sent away on two consecutive blocks as Millsaps would continue to execute defensively.

Alexandre almost connected on a pass at the left post, but his opportunity went just wide in the 21st minute.

Surrounded by defenders inside the box, Hamauei would grab his first save of the matchup in the 22nd minute.

The Shreveport, La., native would disrupt another Vikings kick, five minutes later.

At the 40th minute, Berry fired another kick high and left to keep the matchup scoreless.

Wilkins' kick would then be declined from the right side of the goal post, as he would look to put the Majors ahead first in the 43rd minute.

Millsaps would end the first half with a free kick with both teams going into halftime still tied at 0-0.

In the second half, Dykes would record his third collegiate of the season in the 50th minute by cruising past defenders and booting the ball with his left foot in the low-right corner.

DeCamp forced the ball forward on a quick counterattack and would be credited with the assist.

Berry down 1-0, would look to draw back even in the 53rd minute, but would be shut down by Hamauei dismantling the kick with his gloves.

In the 70th minute, Payne fired a chance that narrowly missed the left of the goal post. Another Berry shot would be blocked shortly after in the 77th minute.

Then with 11:26 to play Hamauei collided with a teammate and Viking attacker and was forced to exit the game with an injury.

Davenport, making his third collegiate appearance, would step in for Hamauei in net and immediately rise up to the challenge by making a point-blank save in the 80th minute to hold the lead.

Berry followed 90 seconds later with a shot high and left, while Dykes looked to seal the game with a near miss out right in the 83rd minute.

The Vikings again missed a shot to the left in the 84th minute and would be blocked by the Majors in the 85th.

Berry would end the matchup with a great chance off the crossbar with 51 seconds to play, but Millsaps held to better the Vikings, 1-0 on Friday night.
