CANTON, Ga. – A dynamic defensive and special teams effort helped power the Millsaps football team past Southwestern University, 17-14 over the weekend. On Monday, Millsaps junior linebacker
Nehemiah Coalson was voted the Southern Athletic Association Defensive Athlete of the Week and Millsaps freshman kicker
Connor Babin was voted the SAA Special Teams Athlete of the Week by league coaches.
The Millsaps defense forced five fumbles and secured four takeaways at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown, Texas on Saturday. Coalson played a pivotal role when he grabbed a fumble and scored from 19 yards out to give Millsaps a 12-7 lead in the beginning of the fourth quarter. The Belzoni, Miss., native added eight tackles, including three solo stops in the win.
Babin connected on a 46-yard field goal with two seconds remaining to help seal the win. His field goal was the fourth longest in program history. The Houma, La., product also excelled with kickoffs, totaling four for 242 yards (60.5-yard average). Babin also was named the SAA Special Teams Athlete of the Week on Sept. 30.
Additionally, Millsaps freshman quarterback
Cole Canatella was the SAA Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 30 as well, while senior punter
Ethan Klapatch secured SAA Special Teams Athlete of the Week recognition on Sept. 9.
The Majors return to action next Saturday, Oct. 26 and will host Hendrix College for Homecoming. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. with live video and live stats available at gomajors.com.
