Volleyball Knocks Down Oglethorpe, Berry in Conference Sweeps

Majors Improve to 18-4, 5-3 in SAA Matches

JACKSON, Miss. A pair of Georgia foes challenged the Millsaps volleyball team over the weekend and both were swept by the Majors inside the Hangar Dome. Millsaps (18-4, 5-3 SAA) overcame Oglethorpe (25-18, 25-22, 25-20) on Friday and bettered Berry (25-23, 25-21, 25-16) on Sunday. 
 
Match 1: Millsaps 3, Oglethorpe 0 
(25-18, 25-22, 25-20) 
 
Senior Zoe Elder recorded her 13th double-double of the regular season with 29 assists and 13 digs, while adding two blocks and two kills. Junior Mallory Richardson tallied her 500th career kill against the Stormy Petrels, while tallying six kills and three digs. 
 
Senior Anna Capezzera posted seven kills and eight digs, while junior Ally Baer held 12 kills, one blocked and nine digs. Junior Trista Naquin contested six kills, three digs and three blocked assists. 
 
Freshman Abigail Drury finished off the Stormy Petrels with a match-high 16 digs. 
 
Millsaps bettered Oglethorpe, 7-2 in the opening of the first set. The Stormy Petrels would recover on a 5-2 run to cut their deficit down to two points. 
 
The Majors would resume their lead back up to 15-9 as Baer would collect three consecutive kills midway through the set. 
 
Oglethorpe would respond back on a 5-1 run to reduce the Majors lead down to 16-14. 
 
Millsaps would go on a 9-3 hot streak as Baer would gather two kills following five attack errors and a service error. 
 
Capezzera would finish off the rest for the squad with a crucial kill to close out the first in favor of the Majors, 25-18. 
 
In the second set both teams trade points back and forth. A 4-0 run would put the Majors ahead, 20-16. The match soon tightened to a one point Millsaps advantage at 22-21. 
 
The Majors would call a timeout afterwards and surpass the Stormy Petrels with a 3-1 close.  A service error, an attack error and a critical kill by Naquin would help claim the third set for Millsaps, 25-22. 
 
In the beginning of the third set, Oglethorpe stood over the Majors, 7-2. Millsaps would eventually call a timeout and see the difference on a 6-3 run, shortening the visiting team's advantage to one point. 
 
Capezzera would later deliver two consecutive kills and an Oglethorpe bad set pushed the Majors ahead, 12-11. 
 
The Stormy Petrels responded with three consecutive points as part of a 6-2 rally to take a 17-14 lead. 
 
Millsaps retaliated back on a huge 11-2 run to shut down the Stormy Petrels, 25-20 in the conference matchup on Saturday. A Richardson kill and Oglethorpe attack error closed out the match in three sets. 
 
 
Match 2: Millsaps 3, Berry 0 
(25-23, 25-21, 25-16) 
 
The momentum continued for Millsaps (18-4, 5-3 SAA) into Sunday as the Majors dispatched Berry (8-10, 5-2 SAA) in three sets. It was the first victory over the Vikings since 2014, snapping a 21-match streak. 
 
Millsaps also avenged a 3-0 defeat in Georgia on Sept. 28. 
 
Sophomore Sandy Bourgeois garnered 21 digs and two aces, while Capezzera added nine kills, nine digs and three blocks. 
 
Elder dished out 26 assists, six digs, four kills and an ace. Baer also secured eight kills, four blocks and an ace. Richardson added eight kills as well. 
 
Capezzera tied the match with a kill before Millsaps moved ahead 4-3 in the back-and-forth first set. 
 
Berry would use a 4-0 run to race ahead, 8-4. Both teams would trade off points before Millsaps utilized a 4-0 rally of their own to keep the match in a draw. 
 
With both teams tied at 16-16, a Richardson kill would move the Majors ahead, 18-17. Then a 3-0 run would push the Majors ahead, 21-18 before Berry would call a timeout. 
 
The set found the teams tied at 22-22 before the Majors would finish strong with Naquin, Capezzera and Stephens erupted with kills to vanquish the Vikings, 25-23 in the first set. 
 
Both teams exchanged points in the opening of the second set before the Majors used a 6-0 run to rush out front, 12-8. 
 
Berry would call a timeout before accumulating a 4-0 run to cut the Major advantage down to, 14-13. 
 
Millsaps would call a timeout as both teams would continue to battle back and forth. The Majors closed out the second set with an emphatic 5-0 push to escape from Berry, 25-21. Elder crushed down a pair of kills, Berry netted two attack errors and Baer finished off the visitors with an ace. 
 
In the third and final set, Capezzera tallied the first kill prior to the match being tied at 4-4 and 6-6. 
 
The Majors would begin to take control following two kills by Richardson and an Elder kill to help separate from Berry, 9-6. 
 
Millsaps used two additional 3-0 runs to make it a 15-8 contest. A kill by senior Rylee Stephens following a bad set and a service error would boost the Majors ahead to 19-11. 
 
Berry would try to build their confidence with a 3-0 rally, but it was not enough as Millsaps continued to fight strong. 
 
The Majors closed out the match on a 5-2 run thanks to two Berry errors alongside Richardson, Baer and Capezzera kills. 
 
Millsaps would better the Vikings, 25-16 to secure their 10th home victory of the regular season.
