JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps women's volleyball team (18-5, 5-4 SAA) fell short to Centre College (25-23, 18-25, 25-22, 23-25, 10-15) in a Southern Athletic Association home matchup inside the Hangar Dome on Saturday.
Senior Zoe Elder led the Majors with her 14th double-double of the season with 44 assists, 25 digs, four blocks and four kills.
Classmate Anna Capezzera tied a career-high with 21 kills and added 18 digs and two aces.
Junior Mallory Richardson posted 10 kills and two digs, while freshman Abigail Drury accumulated 16 digs and junior Olivia Danos added 15 digs.
Junior Ally Baer dominated with 11 kills, five digs, four blocks and recorded an ace. Additionally, sophomore Sandy Bourgeois set a career-high with 33 digs against the Colonels.
Centre (18-4, 10-0 SAA) opened the first set with a 6-1 lead. However, Millsaps would pick up a 4-0 run minutes later to trim their deficit down by one point.
The Colonels would revenge the Majors with their own 4-0 run to move ahead, 10-5.
Millsaps would tally on a 5-2 rally as Baer would post three kills to cut the Colonel deficit to 12-10 early.
Centre would record a point from a bad set to top the Majors 13-10, but a kill by Baer and Capezzera would tie the matchup at 13-13.
Both teams would trade off points before Centre would step ahead, 19-16 following an attack error.
Stephens and Richardson would track down two kills to minimize the Colonels' margin moments later to 19-18.
Following a Centre point, Millsaps side of the court would stand tall and build momentum with a 7-3 run to close out the first set.
Richardson, Baer and Capezzera would flex three kills to close out the first set with a 25-23 win.
In the second set, Centre stopped the Majors with a 5-2 early escape.
Capezzera would punch in a kill to cut the Colonels lead down 5-3.
A Richardson and Stephens kill would see the difference on the squad as the team would draw back in only trailing behind, 6-5.
Centre would discover a kill, a service ace and attack error to travel ahead, 9-6.
However, another Richardson kill, and an attack error would reduce the Colonels stretch, 9-8.
Both teams would begin to swap points in the bottom of the set while Millsaps would hold onto an 18-17 lead.
The Colonels would storm past the Majors on an 8-0 run to claim the second set, 25-18.
In the third set, Millsaps stopped the Colonels early following a 4-1 run, Capezzera and Baer would collect a pair of kills recorded by two attack errors.
A Naquin kill would move the Majors ahead 5-2 before Colonels add a kill to narrow the Majors lead by one point.
Capezzera and Naquin would alter out another kill with an attack error to pull the Majors further, with an 8-4 extension in the third set.
Centre would capture a 4-0 run to match the Majors in a tie moments later.
However, an attack error would give the Colonels a one-point edge on the next play.
Millsaps would install an 8-3 run before the Colonels would call a timeout to continue taking over with an 18-14 lead.
The Majors would continue to dominate as another kill by Capezzera would tear down the Colonels 19-16.
Capezzera would continue to make noise on the court following another solid kill that would bring the Majors forward 24-19.
Centre looking to find answers would fall in the last minute as the Majors would prompt a score with an attack error to claim the third set, 25-22.
In the fourth set, Centre seized an early 6-2 lead, Millsaps would call a timeout and respond back with two Richardson kills following a service error to narrow the Colonels get out 6-5.
Both teams would draw points back and forth before Centre would accumulate a kill to take an 11-9 carry.
A Naquin kill would put the game into a 14-14 stand as two attack errors would be cause by the Colonels.
Centre would use a small 3-0 run to take a 17-14 lead shortly afterwards.
Richardson would feed into another kill on a Majors 3-0 run, that would be assisted by a service error and an attack error to draw the contest 17-17.
Both teams would go face-to-face in the bottom of the set.
Millsaps would go down by one point as Capezzera would close out the Majors with a kill.
Centre last point would result in an attack error as they would see the fourth set in a 25-23 victory.
In the final set of the evening, Millsaps moved quickly on a 3-1 lead following a kill by Capezzera issued by a service error and an attack error.
Both teams would begin trading off points, however Millsaps would hold command of a 9-8 lead moments later with Capezzera dishing out another kill.
Centre would rush the Majors on a 7-1 run afterwards, Capezzera would lay out her final as the Majors would in the final set 15-10.
