Huntingdon Outlasts Women’s Soccer, 1-0 in Regular-Season Finale

Majors Fall to Huntingdon, Next Travel for SAA Tournament

JACKSON, Miss. The Millsaps women's soccer team fell short to Huntingdon College, 1-0 in its regular-season finale at Harper Davis Field on Friday.

Sophomore Alex Bremond, classmate Mollie Spradley (two shots on goal) and freshman Suzanna Busbee (two shots on goal) all contested three shots on the evening against the Hawks.

Sophomore Becca Quick, junior Keely Marshall, senior Ana Cuesta and classmate Nicole Balduccini (one shot on goal) all registered one shot attempt.

Huntingdon held a very narrow 15-13 shot-attempt advantage and secured a small 7-5 margin for on-target attempts.

The Hawks also recorded six corner kicks to the Majors' one.

Junior Emily Lozano finished the matchup with six saves.

Bremond opened the first half with a missed shot wide right hoping to post an early lead for the Majors, two minutes in.

Huntingdon would collect their first save of the matchup as Spradley kicked a shot low to the right of goal a minute later.

As the first moments continued, a Busbee kick would be caught in the reach of the Hawks goalkeeper in the fifth minute. Lozano recorded her initial save 31 seconds later inside the goal cage.

Surrounded by defenders, the Mesquite, Texas, native would prompt another save at the 15th minute to keep the team effort going.

Busbee recorded a great opportunity to almost score a kick, but was interfered by the Huntingdon goalkeeper in the 18th minute.

Lozano facing multiple foes in front of the soccer mouth would settle for another save three minutes later.

The Major goalkeeper would handle the Hawks again with another nifty catch just outside the box in the 31st minute.

Balduccini followed by creating a shot for the Majors in the 33rd minute but would be stopped by the Hawks goalkeeper.

Lozano would make another save in the 35 minute before Huntingdon would miss a shot high above the soccer goal three minutes later as the chances continued.

Millsaps then shut down the Hawks with three blocks in the 39th and 40th minutes.

Huntingdon would ante up their offense in the 41st minute for the first goal of the contest. A throw in the Hawks attacking end led to a shot from a severe angle, arching shot over Lozano's head and landed inside the goal to lead, 1-0.

Millsaps would end the first half with three consecutive throw-ins as Huntingdon would go into halftime leading by one score.

In the second half, Lozano would stop the Hawks with her sixth save of the matchup in the 49th minute.

Quick would almost give Millsaps their first score when she saw a shot go just left of the soccer goal with 30 minutes to play.

Huntingdon, looking to extend their lead, would gather a chance that went wide right in the 66th minute.

Looking for an opening around the opponents, Bremond's shot was blocked in the 74th minute.

Busbee followed by racing ahead down the pitch, but the shot off her foot went to the left of the goal six minutes later.

Spradley would go head-to-head with the Hawks goalkeeper in the 82nd minute by surpassing a few defenders to see a quality shot but see a shot go into the netkeeper's hands.

Millsaps would block Huntingdon shot in the final minute of the second half as the defenses locked down completely. The Majors closed out the matchup with a goal kick by Lozano to end the regular-season finale against the Hawks on Friday.

Millsaps will not await their First Round opponent of the SAA Women's Soccer Championships. Time will be determined, but the postseason will begin on Saturday, Nov. 2. Live video and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
