JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps men's soccer team (2-5-2) put up a valiant effort but would fall short to Tougaloo College (1-4-1) in a tough battle, 2-1 at Harper Davis Field on Tuesday night.
Freshman
Ellis Dykes led the way for the Majors with his second collegiate goal of the season, while recording four shots and three shots on frame.
Senior
Kade Folse highlighted one shot on goal and freshman
Hogan Payne finished the night with four shots and one shot on goal.
Junior
Sam Cagle posted two shot attempts, while graduate
Connor Stegeman, senior
Luke Seelmann, junior
Fisher DeCamp, freshman
Kaleb Wilkins and classmate
Alden Romano all featured one shot try against the Bulldogs. Romano also tallied his first collegiate point with an assist.
In the statistical categories, Millsaps outnumbered Tougaloo, 7-1 on corner kicks and outshot the Bulldogs, 16-13. The Majors also held a 5-4 advantage with shots on target.
Both teams were equal with 15 fouls each in a very physical contest.
Junior goalkeeper
Michael Hamauei, the reigning SAA Defensive Player of the Week, garnered two saves against the Bulldogs.
Dykes opened the match in the 12th minute with a narrowly missed shot off the top of the crossbar, hoping to put the Majors on the score sheet first.
In the 14th minute of the match, the Bulldogs would contest a block shot, however the Majors would come back with a blocked kick of their own in the 22nd minute.
Playing very competitively, Millsaps would capture a yellow card at the 24th minute only to see the Bulldogs record a yellow card at the 30th minute.
Moments later, Tougaloo would hit the right goal post, but the game remained scoreless.
Folse then took a shot in the 36th minute by firing the ball to the lower left of the net, but be stopped by the Bulldogs.
Millsaps would continue to attack their cross-city foes by gaining access to a corner kick to close out the first half. Both teams would go into halftime scoreless.
In the 52nd minute the Bulldogs would tally their first goal of the match from a shot in the box.
Tougaloo would then stop Payne in the 57th minute and Dykes in the 65th minute as the Majors looked for the equalizer.
At the 68th minute, Hamauei being at the right place pushed the ball aside on a vertical jump to stop the Bulldogs kick, which was labeled for the top right corner.
In the 79th minute the, Shreveport, La., native would again make a great save to keep the match alive for the Majors.
Folse unfortunately collected his second yellow card of the match and was sent off in the 82nd minute. Millsaps closed the remainder of the contest with 10 men on the field.
The Bulldogs then tallied their second goal of the match and move ahead 2-0 in the 86th minute.
Dykes immediately responded by collecting his second collegiate goal of the season only 48 seconds later.
The Tuscaloosa, Ala., product would score from a bouncing ball off a corner kick, after an initial Romano header.
Tougaloo would then earn a red card following the goal after arguing with the referee. Both squads played 10-on-10 for the final four minutes of the contest.
In the 88th minute of action, Payne nearly connected on a pass at the side of the net, but the chance escaped just wide of the left post.
The scoreboard would begin to wind down with Cagle presenting one more shot off target with a minute to play.
Tougaloo would escape with a 2-1 victory, bettering the Majors on Tuesday night.
Millsaps will be back in action on Friday and host Hendrix College for Senior Night. The match is set to begin at 5 p.m. at Harper Davis Field. Live video and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
