SHREVEPORT, La. – The Millsaps College men's basketball team fought hard on the court, but was bettered by Centenary College, 72-57 inside the Gold Dome on Friday.
Junior Caleb Kent led the Majors with his second double-double of the season. The guard netted 14 points and tied a season-high 11 rebounds, while adding two assists and a pair of steals.
Sophomore Cameron Lumar recorded 17 points, two assists and a pair of rebounds off the glass.
Senior Drew Roth recorded a season-high 10 rebounds while registering seven points and a block.
Sophomore Devin Harris posted eight points, three rebounds and one steal against the Gents.
Millsaps (2-6) outnumbered Centenary (2-7) in nearly every statistical category of the night. The Majors took the Gents down, 11-0 in fastbreak points, while leading 14-8 in second-chance points. Centenary also fell behind, 13-9 in total bench points accumulated.
The Majors held the Gents to a 26-16 lead in points inside the paint, while taking a 16-11 advantage in points off turnovers. Centenary held a slight shooting advantage from the floor (36.7 percent to 34.4 percent) and controlled the turnover margin (18-10).
In the first half, a Kent made jump shot gave the Majors their first points of the contest.
Millsaps would soon extend their lead to 8-5 following a knock down three-pointer by Lumar.
With nine minutes and 34 seconds remaining, the Gents would drop a three-pointer to increase their lead to six points after a back-and-forth battle with the Majors.
As the first half continued, a Lumar second consecutive made three pointer would cut the Gents scoring down by one point.
However, Centenary would begin taking over the court to close out the first half up by 14 points at 42-28.
In the second half, a Kent layup would shorten the opponent's advantage down to five points following a 7-0 run.
With nine minutes and 15 minutes remaining, a tip-in layup made by Roth brought the Majors even closer, trailing behind at 50-46.
Both teams continued trading shot makes as a Lumar layup cut the deficit to three points with six minutes remaining.
Centenary would soon respond back on a 15-4 run to extend their lead to 70-56 with less than a minute to play.
The Gents would better the Majors, 72-57 inside the Gold Dome on Friday.
