Second-Half Performance Propels Women’s Basketball Past Centenary, 64-52

Garin Freeman Sets SAA Record for Free-Throw Makes on Friday

SHREVEPORT, La. The Millsaps women's basketball team remained undefeated on the road after taking down Centenary College, 64-52 inside the Gold Dome on Friday.

Sophomore Garin Freeman led the way by setting the Southern Athletic Association record for free-throw makes in a game with 20 contributions coming from the foul line. She scored all of her points at the line, shooting 20-for-22 (91 percent), while registering six rebounds, five assists and three steals.

The Little Rock, Ark., native also shot (20-of-22) surpassed the record of 18 set by Millsaps alum Taelor Manning on Feb. 28, 2021. Freeman's 20 makes are the most by a Major since at least 2009-10 when the NCAA began tracking individual game free-throw statistics.

Additionally, the SAA first fielded basketball during the 2012-13 season. Freeman's 20 makes and 22 attempts currently pace all of NCAA Division III. Her 22 total tries are also the most since Dia Fortenberry provided 24 attempts on Nov. 25, 2018.

Senior Haley Franklin erupted on the court with her third double-double of the season. The Baton Rouge, La.,  native posted 14 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and one steal, while shooting 7-for-12 from the floor.

Junior Elyse Warren was two rebounds away from grabbing a double-double of her own. The forward posted 12 points and eight boards, shooting 4-of-5 from the floor.

Sophomore Tia Anderson finished with eight points, four rebounds, two steals and a block against the Ladies.

Millsaps (9-1) bettered Centenary (1-8), 16-9 in second-chance points and 28-17 in points off turnovers.

The Ladies tallied a 4-0 led to open the game before Freeman's made layup would cut the contest down by one margin.

As the first quarter continued, a three-pointer by junior Lexus Keyes would give Millsaps their first lead of the game at 8-6 with both teams trading points.

Centenary closed out the first quarter with a layup to take a slim lead over the Majors, 15-11.

In the second quarter, Millsaps would begin to turn things around as senior Whitney Novak (three rebounds, one steal) would record a layup after being surrounded by defenders inside the paint.

Both opponents would continue to exchange points before Centenary would use an 8-0 run to move ahead, 23-16.

Midway through the second quarter, Warren and Franklin layups would condense the Ladies' lead down to three.

With 2:36 remaining on the clock, junior Maddy Maw collected a steal and finish strong at the basket off a fastbreak layup to reduce the deficit to one.

Millsaps would continue playing hard as Anderson gave the Majors their last points of the second quarter with a jumper and close a 7-0 run.

As the second quarter concluded, Centenary would bank a three-pointer at the buzzer make it a 31-30 contest, with Millsaps out front.

In the third quarter, Millsaps would strengthen their margin by surpassing the Ladies with a 13-3 run.

After shooting 50 percent from field goal range in both the second and third quarters, Millsaps continued to dominate on all cylinders by holding the Gents 23.5 percent (4-for-17) from the floor in the third.

A Centenary jump shot and 6-0 run would cut their deficit down to seven points with 5:28 to go.

However, Freeman iced the game away with six consecutive makes from the free-throw line. Franklin would then give the Majors their largest lead of contest at 14 points with an easy layup inside the post.

Leading by 11, Warren would conclude the matchup with a final free throw of her own to help the Majors surpass Centenary, 64-52 on Friday.

The Majors will remain on the road to face the University of Ozarks on Thursday, Dec. 19. Matchup is set for a 3 p.m. start in Clarksville, Ark., with live video and live stats available at gomajors.com.
