JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps men's basketball team claimed their sixth conference win and sixth win at home by taking down Rhodes, 68-56 inside the Hangar Dome on Friday.
Millsaps (7-16, 6-7 SAA) took over the court in nearly every statistical category by downing Rhodes (9-14, 3-9 SAA) with a 10-6 advantage in second-chance points, while leading 14-2 in fast breaks.
Freshman
Cameron Lumar led the Majors in scoring with 19 points while grabbing six rebounds, one assist and setting a career-high five steals. Lumar finished 7-of-7 from the free-throw line in the huge win against the Lynx.
Sophomore
Rodney Phillips Jr. was another key scorer for the Majors. The Marrero, La., native tallied 14 points, one block and three rebounds, while shooting 6-of-9 from the field.
Classmate
Evan Watson finished with seven points and one rebound as senior
Aaron Ursin recorded seven points, five rebounds, two steals, one block and an assist.
The Majors would take control in the beginning of the first half, leading 6-0 following Lumar two made free throws, a senior
TJ Hogan two pointer and layup by junior
Drew Roth.
With 10:49 minutes in, Rhodes tied the game at 13-13 and later take the lead 16-13 following a trey from long range.
Millsaps would find themselves falling behind by three with 7:17 to go, but a 3-pointer by Watson would bring the Majors back to tie the game at 18-18.
Both teams would begin trading off points until a 3-pointer by sophomore
Mack Gorton would put the Majors ahead 28-20 before going into halftime, leading 28-22.
Ursin gave the Majors their first points in the second half with a strong layup.
Hoping to find room to score, the Lynx would fall behind midway through as a Phillips Jr. jumper inside the paint would push the Majors ahead by 17 points with 13:31 to go.
The Lynx responded with a 10-0 run in a 2:10 span, but the Majors pushed back ahead by 14 points with 6:24 remaining.
Rhodes continued challenging the Majors late in the second half, but it wasn't enough as Phillips Jr., Ursin and Lumar baskets down the stretch put the game away at 68-56.
The Majors will be back action on Sunday to face Hendrix for Senior Day, beginning at 3 p.m.
