JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps softball team fell in a doubleheader to No. 8 nationally ranked Belhaven, 5-0 and 10-1 on Wednesday at the Millsaps College Softball Complex.
Game 1: 5-0, L
Freshman Mya Skinner and senior Brianna Newman were terrific despite yielding five runs. The pair held Belhaven's attack to one hit.
Skinner tossed five innings with two strikeouts and one hit against while walking eight batters and five runs. Newman finished off the last two innings with no hits, runs or walks allowed with one strikeout.
Senior Camille Black finished 1-for-2 and walked. Classmates Molli Perry (stolen base) and Katie Norris along with freshman Allana Vasquez all batted 1-for-3 against the Blazers.
With a runner on third, Belhaven used an error and hit on contact to take their first lead in the top of the first inning.
Perry responded in the bottom of the first with a lead-off single through the right side and later took second base with a steal. The Blazers ended the threat moments later.
In the top of the second inning, Belhaven extended their lead 2-0 with a lead-off walk and only Blazer hit of the game three batters later. The visitors added a third run in the top of the third with three walks and a sacrifice fly.
A wild pitch and fielder's choice brought two more runs home for the Blazers in the top of the fifth inning.
The bottom of the sixth inning saw Black walk and Vasquez singled to build the Majors' confidence. Belhaven used a strikeout to close the chance in the ensuing at bat.
Norris singled to right center in the seventh inning for the final hit of Game One as the Blazers held for a 5-0 decision.
Game 2: 10-1, L
Black batted 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Vasquez doubled and walked. Freshman Kadence Cannon recorded a hit and senior Haylie Hoffpauir also walked and scored a run.
Vasquez pitched all seven innings for the Majors in the circle.
Belhaven would top the Majors in the top of the third inning with three runs and later extended their lead in the fifth with a fourth tally.
The Majors would record their first run as Black singled Hoffpauir home from second base in the bottom of the fifth inning. Hoffpauir reached on an error and advanced into scoring position courtesy of a Perry sacrifice bunt.
The Blazers would score five runs in the seventh to secure their win over the Majors by a 10-1 count.
Millsaps will next host Birmingham-Southern, starting at 12 p.m. in a Saturday doubleheader at the Millsaps College Softball Complex. Live video and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
