Oglethorpe Downs Baseball in Doubleheader on Saturday

Majors Fall in Weekend Series to Stormy Petrels

ATLANTA – The Millsaps baseball team was battled in a pair of tough losses to Oglethorpe, 13-6 and 2-1 at Hermance Stadium on Saturday.

Game 1: 13-6, L

Junior Bradley Pelle (one run, two RBIs, walk) and sophomore Mason Morgan (one run, one RBI, two walks) both batted 1-for-2 with productive afternoons. Graduate Branyan Bounds finished 1-for-3 with an RBI, stolen base and pair of walks. Junior Evan Scott went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and hit by pitch.

Junior Nick Tarantino pitched six innings with six strikeouts, while only allowing two runs, five hits and four walks.

The Majors stormed past the Stormy Petrels, 1-0 in the top of the fifth inning with a Pelle double to right field to point Scott home from second base. On the next play, Bounds would single and advance Pelle around for a 2-0 margin.

In the top of the seventh inning, freshman Degan Hensley grounded out with an RBI bunt to move Morgan from third base, helping the Majors extend their lead to 3-0.

The bottom of the seventh inning saw Oglethorpe take control with seven runs following three hits, hit by pitch, two walks and pair of errors.

Millsaps fought back with three runs in the top of the eighth to cut the deficit to 7-6. Scott singled to help bring around junior Gray Berry with the assistance of an error. Morgan later used a bases-loaded walk to tally senior Case Page and a Pelle sacrifice fly would score Scott.

However in the bottom of the eighth inning, Oglethorpe responded with six additional runs for a 13-6 edge and would hold for the Game Two series victory.

Game 2: 2-1, L (7 inn.)

Graduate Wil Wood tossed all seven innings where he struck out two batters and held the Stormy Petrels to two runs, three walks and five hits in the narrow defeat.

Pelle recorded an RBI and a hits, while Bounds, sophomore EJ Ousley and sophomore Cole Wix also tallied a hit. Scott and senior Jackson Ware (stolen base) both walked twice.

The bottom of the second inning saw Oglethorpe lead the Majors, 1-0 after a pair of singles and walk. Oglethorpe made it 2-0 in the sixth in the pitching battle following a double, ground out advancement to third and a wild pitch.

With the game on the line at Hermance Stadium in the seventh and final inning, Wix would open with a single up the middle. Bounds later doubled with one out to put two runners in scoring position.

Pelle grounded out, but brought pinch runner Wes Grant to the plate to make it 2-1 with two outs. An ensuing ground out ended the opportunity and allowed the Stormy Petrels to hold on for the win.
