JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps baseball team took control early but were unable to hold back Belhaven, falling 9-3 in Game Three of the Cowboy Maloney Series at Twenty Field on Tuesday.
Sophomore EJ Ousley batted 1-for-3 with two RBIs, while junior Evan Scott finished 1-for-1 with three walks. Graduate Branyan Bounds (two runs) and junior Bradley Pelle (one run) hit 2-for-5.
Senior Clay Busby pitched two innings of relief, while allowing only zero runs and only two hits. Sophomore Gavin Tranchina stood on the mound for 1.1 scoreless innings with zero runs and one hit against.
Belhaven (14-10) opened the game with a homer and moved ahead 2-0 with an RBI ground out with a runner on third.
Millsaps (13-16) soon answered in the bottom of the first with a Bounds single and Pelle double. A sacrifice fly by Ousley would advance Bounds home to put the Majors on board, trailing 2-1.
Bounds and Pelle then hit back-to-back singles in the third before Ousley singled through the left side to score Bounds and tie the game at 2-2.
Moments later with the bases loaded, a Page walk would send Pelle home to give the Majors their first lead on the field, 3-2.
Belhaven regained the lead at 4-3 with an RBI single and run during a rundown in the fifth. Then a single, steal and single made it a 5-3 game in the sixth. The Blazers closed the scoring in the sixth with a two-run homer to make it 7-3.
Another run on a throw and steal attempt would boost the Blazers, 8-3. A sacrifice fly would close the scoring in the ninth inning for Belhaven for a 9-3 victory.
