Millsaps Athletics Programs Set for 2024 SAA Spring Championships

Baseball, Golf, Softball, Tennis, Track and Field Compete for Titles this Weekend

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps College Athletics spring programs are ready to take part in the 2024 SAA Spring Championships, beginning Friday. Conference supremacy and titles are on the line as the Majors compete in Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee.

Below are team-by-team previews and links to follow Millsaps baseball, men's and women's golf, softball, women's tennis along with men's and women's track and field this weekend.

2024 SAA Baseball Championship
The Millsaps baseball program enters the 2024 SAA Baseball Championship as the No. 8 seed with a 14-25 record and 4-17 league mark. The Majors begin the tournament by traveling to No. 1 seed Centre for a best-of-three series, beginning Friday. Winners of the four opening round series will advance to the double-elimination SAA Championship Tournament and play at the highest remaining seed, May 2-4.

The Majors held the Colonels' high-powered offense to just two runs in Game Two of the season series on April 6, while narrowly falling to the Colonels, 5-4 in 11 innings the next day. The Majors will seek revenge to advance to the championship round of the tournament.

Junior Evan Scott leads the team with a .303 batting average, followed by senior Jackson Ware (.294), freshman Degan Hensley (.289) and graduate Branyan Bounds (.270).

Bounds has 37 hits and 32 runs scored, while junior Bradley Pelle is right behind with 34 hits and 30 runs. Scott leads the Majors with four home runs, while Ware and Pelle are tied with two home runs each.

Scott is also second with 36 hits and paces the team with 27 RBIs. Senior Case Page trails closely behind Scott with 26 RBIs on the year.

Graduate Wil Wood paces the pitching staff on the mound with a 3.92 ERA, while ranking sixth nationally in strikeouts with an impressive 83 on the season. Wood also leads the team with five wins. Junior Nick Tarantino (3.95 ERA) and sophomore Will Norris (three wins) round out the starting crew for the Majors.

Look for senior Jackson Hood (four saves), Gavin Tranchina (4.09 ERA) and senior Clay Busby (3.79 ERA) to round out the bullpen regulars this weekend.

2024 SAA Men's & Women's Golf Championship
The Millsaps men's and women's golf programs look to continue their momentum and find success in the 2024 SAA Men's & Women's Golf Championship, which will be hosted by Sewanee at Greystone Golf Club, April 26-28. Live scoring is available for all three rounds of play.

Junior Annie Piggott looks to maintain her 2024 success after being named the SAA Women's Golf Athlete of the Week a record four times. In six competitions in the fall and spring, Piggott has finished 15th or better on every occasion.

She placed seventh on Sept. 19, fourth on Oct. 3, third on Feb. 27, first on March 18 and sixth on April 9. She became the first Millsaps woman's golfer to win a non-head-to-head competition since 2013.

Classmate Sophia Albasini will also contend for the Majors. Her best showings were posted at The Legends Cup (T-22nd, Oct. 3) and Hal Sutton Invitational (20th, March 19).

Sophomore Lily Moore also looks to make an impact in her second SAA Championship.

On the men's side, the Majors have been propelled by freshman Preston Severs, who has twice been selected the SAA Men's Golf Athlete of the Week.

He has finished 26th or better in all six events, including a pair of top-10 showings. Severs is performing at his best based on his previous three competitions. He placed ninth (plus-10) at the Space City Classic on Feb. 27, sixth (plus-5) at the Wolf Pack Spring Invitational on April 8 and 12th (plus-4) at the Shoals Intercollegiate on April 16.

Junior Will Danielson looks to bring his experience to the forefront, having carded four top-30 showings. Danielson along with graduates Krtin Udith and Price Bryan as well as freshmen Juan Moral and Davin Karst should provide a strong scoring punch.

Udith has competed in five of six events with a season-best 31st place on April 16. Bryan joined the Majors in the spring after transferring from Birmingham-Southern with a 19th- and 22nd-place showing. Lastly, Moral had his best performance at the last event, placing 26th, while Karst was 34th at the Alamo City Classic on Oct. 10.

2024 SAA Softball Championship
The Millsaps softball team enters the 2024 SAA Softball Championship in the Birmingham Pod as the No. 6 seed with a 5-12 record in league play. They will take on No. 3 seed Rhodes, beginning the double-elimination competition at 2:30 p.m. CT on Friday. Host Birmingham-Southern will also look to advance to SAA Championship Series, held May 3-4, as the No. 2 seed. Hendrix completes the pod as the No. 7 seed.

Freshman Allana Vasquez leads Millsaps with a .343 batting average. Also hitting above .300 are seniors Katie Norris (.340) and Molli Perry (.339).

Perry paces the Majors with 39 hits, 18 runs scored and 16 stolen bases. Vasquez follows with 36 hits, 14 runs and a team-leading 26 RBIs, tying the single-game record of seven against Sewanee on April 6. Norris is right behind with 34 hits, 15 runs and 13 RBIs.

Additionally, sophomore Kinsey Smith has totaled 16 hits, two home runs and 15 RBIs. Senior Camille Black also has 26 hits on the year to go along with 12 runs scored.

Expect Vasquez (4.24 ERA) to take charge in the circle. The first year has four wins, 46 strikeouts, eleven complete games and 94 IP.

Senior Brianna Newman (5.08 ERA), classmate Abigail Smith (three wins) and freshman Mya Skinner (5.70 ERA) should all see playing time as starters and relievers throughout the tournament.

Dabadie pairs with Everhart on Court One, while Lister teams up with Vordick on Court Three.

2024 SAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship
The Millsaps men's and women's track and field programs will be competing in the 2024 SAA Outdoor Championship on Friday and Saturday in Conway, Ark., after several impressive performances during the spring season.

On the men's side, senior Patrick Elliott leads the conference in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9 minutes, 38.73 seconds, while freshman Jeremiah Hall ranks second in the men's triple jump at 13.72 meters. Hall also sits third in the long jump (6.71 meters).
