JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps women's soccer team battled to a 1-0 heartbreaking loss to the University of the Ozarks on Friday, but would down crosstown foes Tougaloo College, 12-0 at Harper Davis Field on Sunday.
Match 1: The University of the Ozarks 1, Millsaps 0
Sophomore Mollie Spradley led the Majors with three shot attempts and two shots on goal, as junior Ella Smithweck recorded one shot on goal, while sophomore Alex Bremond registered two shots with one shot on frame.
Freshman Suzanna Busbee, classmate Zillia Biniam and junior Haley James each recorded a shot attempt.
Millsaps outshot the Eagles, 10-5 with a 4-2 on-target advantage.
Busbee would have the first chance of the match in the ninth minute. Smithweck would then almost have the opportunity to open the scoring in the 38th minute with a kick to the bottom center of goal. The Eagles keeper, however, deflected both shots.
In the second half of the match, the University of the Ozarks would tally the first goal of the match in the 55th minute to take the lead.
Millsaps looking for the equalizer, saw James make a chance in the 63rd and Spradley stopped in the 76th minute.
Bremond would try for the tie in the 83rd minute with a kick to the bottom left, but fell into the hands of the Ozarks keeper.
Spradley looking to close the match out in a draw, would respond back with another strong kick to the bottom center, but was captured once again by the Eagles.
The University of the Ozarks would hold on for the final five minutes to secure a 1-0 win.
Match 2: Millsaps 12, Tougaloo College 0
After falling to the University of the Ozarks 1-0 on Friday, the Majors would shut down local foes Tougaloo College, 12-0.
In the statistical category, Millsaps recorded a 51-0 shot advantage, forcing 14 Bulldog saves. The Majors also managed 17 corner kicks.
Bremond led the match with a career-high three goals and four assists, Busbee (one assist) and Biniam finished with a pair of goals each.
Fourth-year student Ana Cuesta scored, while sophomore Becca Quick and junior Keely Marshall both obtained a goal and an assist.
Senior Chloee Beebe collected her first collegiate goal scored as sophomore Spradley tallied her first career goal and added three assists.
Bremond would have a hand on the first seven goals for the Majors and opened the scoring in the eighth minute off a Marshall assist.
In the 15th minute Busbee would score off a Bremond pass. Millsaps would continue to attack the Bulldogs in the 33rd minute as Bremond would tally in her second score with a helper from Spradley.
Before halftime, Biniam would eye the Majors' fourth tally of the match as Bremond set up her teammate. The first half would soon conclude with Majors staying on top, 4-0.
In the second half, Bremond collected the hat trick on a steal unassisted and only 44 seconds later she would pass to Busbee, who made it 6-0 in favor of the Majors.
Millsaps would continue to dominate on the field by watching Biniam tally her second goal of the match with a Bremond helper in the 61st minute.
Only one minute later, Beebe would cross paths with a goal courtesy of a Busbee to make it 8-0.
As the match continued into the 66th minute, Spradley would push the squad forward, 9-0. As the second half continued Cuesta would send the Majors into double digits as Spradley aided with the assist.
A minute later in the 73rd minute, Marshall scored from Quick. Quick would accumulate the last marker for the Majors thanks to a Spradley pass to secure the victory.
