JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps women's soccer team (2-5-1) collected their second consecutive home victory by knocking off Centenary College, 1-0 in a midweek matchup on Wednesday at Harper Davis Field.
Sophomore Alex Bremond led the way with a goal, alongside five shot attempts and four shots on frame. Freshman Suzanna Busbee and junior Haley James both registered two shots and one shot on goal.
Freshman Zillia Biniam tallied three shot tries and senior Chloee Beebe tallied a shot on goal. Classmate Anna Cuesta added a pair of shots on goal.
Junior Emily Lozano made two saves against the Ladies for the shutout.
Centenary College (0-3-1) were outshot 16-3. Millsaps would accumulate nine shots on goal.
In the first half of the match, Millsaps would look for the early advantage following a long-range kick by Busbee. Centenary intercepted the kick for a save in the 12th minute.
Only five minutes later, Bremond would respond with another opportunity.
As the first half continued, Centenary would bypass defenders at the 19th minute with a kick to the low center. Lozano would dismantle the kick on a goalkeeper save as both teams remained scoreless.
Biniam then looked poised for the go-ahead tally, but the Slidell, La., native's kick would be called off on an offside call.
James would take the last shot for the Majors in the closing moments of the first half as both teams would go into halftime scoreless.
In the second half 10 minutes in, Bremond broke away from defenders almost tallying a shot, but it was thwarted before a shot was made by the Centenary goalkeeper at the top of the box.
However, in the 59th minute Bremond would find her luck as Biniam would spring her to an open shot. The first attempt was stopped but a rebound landed back in front of Bremond, who would score off her right foot unassisted to make it 1-0.
The Millsaps defense would make crucial plays, including a terrific tackle by Myah Beebe with 10 minutes to play deep in Major territory. A strong defensive effort down the stretch would help the Majors collect a 1-0 victory.
The Majors will next be back in action hosting MUW on Tuesday, Sept. 24, beginning at 5 p.m. with live video and live stats provided at gomajors.com.
