JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps volleyball team improved to 12-1 on the regular season after shutting down LaGrange College in three sets, 25-13, 25-16, 25-10 on Saturday inside the Hangar Dome.
It was the 12th consecutive victory for the Majors and pulls the team within two wins of its best start since the 2014 season (14-1).
Senior Zoe Elder led the way for the Majors with a double-double with 31 assists, 10 digs and two block assists.
Classmate Anna Capezzera almost contested a double-double with nine digs, seven kills, one assist and one block assist.
Junior Mallory Richardson tallied nine kills and one dig as colleague Ally Baer posted seven kills, three aces, a block assist and three digs.
Sophomore Sandy Bourgeois highlighted with 11 digs, two assists and tied a career-best four aces. Freshman Abigail Drury led the squad with 12 digs.
In the first set, Millsaps buried LaGrange College early with a 14-5 start.
Millsaps would extend their lead to 16-7, following a Panther attack error. A Bourgeois ace closed a late 6-3 run to give Millsaps a 22-11 advantage.
A Richardson kill and pair of LaGrange errors would give the Majors a 25-13 victory in set one.
In the opening of the second set, LaGrange built a 5-0 cushion. However, Millsaps would respond to the Panthers with a 7-1 run to hold a one point advantage.
The Majors would take over at 14-10, as Baer and freshman Jenna Nattinger provided kills.
As the set continued, LaGrange would make substitution changes hoping to find answers trailing behind by two points.
In the bottom of the set, Millsaps utilized a 9-2 run to close the set with kills from Richardson, Naquin, Nattinger and Bourgeois. Bourgeois closed the set at 25-16 with yet another service ace.
The final set saw Millsaps leave nothing to chance with a 9-4 start. The Majors would continue to dominate their foe with a 12-1 run, creating an insurmountable, 21-5 lead.
Millsaps would keep their energy in the bottom of the set as freshman Zoe LaCaze would round up two kills before Richardson would close the match with kill of her own.
The Majors would hold off LaGrange, 25-10 to capture their eighth sweep of the season.
