Volleyball Falls to Berry in SAA Opener

Majors Blanked by Vikings, 3-0 in Road Matchup on Saturday

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. The Millsaps volleyball team (12-2, 0-1 SAA) put up a tough fight against Berry College (5-7, 2-0 SAA) in their SAA opener but came up short, 3-0 at the Cage Center on Saturday.

Senior Anna Capezzera led the way for the Majors with seven kills and 11 digs.

Junior Trista Naquin tallied seven kills, two digs and four block assists, while classmate Ally Baer completed five kills.

Colleague Olivia Danos recorded eight digs and three assists, while sophomore Sandy Bourgeois finished with 14 digs.

Senior Zoe Elder tallied 21 assists, two kills and seven digs against the Vikings.

In the first set, Capezzera opened with three consecutive kills as Millsaps would take a 3-1 lead. However, an attack error by the Majors would draw the Vikings back even at 4-4.

Both teams would continue to battle hard as they exchanged points, but the Vikings would prompt a 5-0 run to move ahead, 13-9.

After a Millsaps timeout, the squad utilized a 6-2 run from Baer and Capezzera kills, a Baer service ace, Viking service error and an attack error to comeback for a 15-15 tie.

Moments later, Millsaps would call their second timeout of the set trailing behind, 18-15. The Vikings would escape with an attack error to claim the first set, 25-20.

In the second set, Berry jumped out to a 12-3 lead. Berry would hold on to claim the second set, 25-13.

In the final set, the Vikings launched into a 5-1 run. Naquin would attack with a kill to narrow the set deficit by three points shortly after.

Berry would space out their lead to 12-5, but in the bottom of the set Millsaps would call a time out and begin pulling back.

After pulling within five points, the Vikings put distance between the two teams with a 5-0 burst to lead, 18-9.

Naquin would collect another kill along with two attack errors, a Capezzera service ace and Viking service error brought the Majors back to within six points at 22-16.

Closing out the set, Naquin and sophomore Amelia Bohl both registered additional kills. Berry though would close out and claim the third and final set, 25-18.

The Majors will be back in action on Sunday to face Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, beginning at 11 a.m. CT. Live video and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
