CONWAY, Ark. – The Millsaps women's basketball team secured their 13th victory of the season by taking down Hendrix College, 78-61 inside the Grove Gymnasium on Tuesday.
Sophomore Garin Freeman led the Majors with 16 points and tied a season-high with four steals against the Warriors. The Little Rock, Ark., native also shot 6-for-8 from the foul line while accumulating six assists and two rebounds.
Junior Elyse Warren dominated on the court by adding her 10th double-double of the season with 15 points and 15 rebounds. She also shot 7-of-12 from field-goal range.
Sophomore Tia Anderson also recorded 15 points alongside one steal and four rebounds. Anderson also shot 5-of-6 from the floor and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.
Senior Haley Franklin highlighted 13 points, eight rebounds, four assists and one steal. She also finished 5-for-6 from the charity stripe.
Junior Lexus Keyes posted seven points, three rebounds and two assists on the afternoon.
The matchup featured four ties and 12 lead changes, but the Majors were able to pull away late in the fourth quarter.
Millsaps (13-2, 2-0 SAA) controlled the paint (38-20), made use of points off turnovers (13-3) and were effective on the fast break (25-6).
A sophomore Taylor Frank (five rebounds) layup in front of the basket gave Millsaps the first points of the game.
With 6:17 remaining on the opening clock, Anderson would drain a three-pointer to keep the Majors in competition with the Warriors.
Hendrix would soon take a five-point lead off a trey before closing out the first quarter on top, 15-11.
In the second quarter, Keyes would knock down a three-pointer and a coast-to-coast layup soon afterward to give Millsaps their third lead of the contest.
Both teams would battle back and forth in the second quarter. Then with three minutes remaining until halftime, Freeman collected a steal on defense and Anderson drained another three-pointer for the Majors.
Franklin closed a 9-0 Millsaps run with a nifty layup to end the first half ahead, 38-30.
In the third quarter, a Warren layup pushed the Majors into their first double-digit advantage at 50-39.
Millsaps continued to rule both sides of the court until Hendrix banked a three-pointer at the moments before the third-quarter buzzer. The Majors still controlled the game at 56-47.
In the fourth quarter, the hosts would make a comeback after banking home the second of back-to-back three-pointers, cutting the Majors' lead down to 61-58.
The Majors would respond back after a called timeout as senior Emily Adams (six points, one assist) netted a three-pointer in response to a 9-2 Warriors run.
With 2:28 to go, Franklin would sink a floating jump shot to keep the Majors in front, 70-58.
Senior Whitney Novak (four rebounds, two steals, one assist) wrapped up the final Millsaps points from the charity stripe to help the team down the Warriors, 78-61 on Tuesday afternoon.
