JACKSON, Miss. — The Millsaps volleyball team put up a fight on the court but was swept by No.14 Berry College, 25-18, 25-15, 25-19 on Saturday inside The Hangar Dome.
Junior Sandy Bourgeois led the defensive efforts for the Majors with 15 digs over three sets.
Senior Ally Baer contributed to the attack with six kills and added two blocks.
Freshman Rachel Zamjahn facilitated the offense by posting 17 assists, while junior Amelia Bohl was effective at the service line, registering two aces and five kills.
In the opening of the first set, Berry (16-3, 7-1 SAA) took control over Millsaps (13-10, 2-6 SAA) following a 5-1 start.
Trailing 22-15, freshman Lily Luneau recorded back-to-back kills to help the Majors mount a late comeback. The Vikings responded with three kills to close the first set, securing a 25-18 victory.
Millsaps started the second set with momentum as Sasser connected on a kill from Zamjahn to take the first point.
However, Berry capitalized on a series of errors from the Majors, allowing them to pull ahead the rest of the set.
Baer and senior Mallory Richardson managed to narrow the gap with key kills, but service errors hindered Millsaps' efforts to sustain pressure.
A mid-set push saw Millsaps close within two points at 11-10, highlighted by a kills from Bohl freshman Madelynn Sasser.
Nevertheless, Berry responded with an offensive surge again, extending their lead thanks to service aces and three straight blocks.
Despite late efforts from the Majors to regain ground, Berry closed out the set with a 25-15 score, maintaining a strong position as the match progressed.
Millsaps opened the third set with an early defensive stand, as Richardson and Luneau combined for a block that led to a point.
Baer and Bohl contributed to the offensive push with a kill and a service ace, respectively, giving the Majors a brief lead.
Berry countered with a series of kills, which kept the score tightly contested. Luneau added two more kills for Millsaps, but Berry managed to piece together a decisive run late in the set.
Millsaps managed to stay close with contributions from Baer and freshman Tatum Husby, but Berry ultimately closed out the set 25-19, securing the match victory.
Looking ahead, the Majors are set to face Oglethorpe University for Senior Day inside the Hangar Dome on Sunday. The match is slated for a noon start with live video and live stats available at gomajors.com.
