Men's Soccer Soars Past Eagles with High-Flying First Half

Majors Best USSU, 4-2 on Tuesday

JACKSON, Miss. — The Millsaps College men's soccer team defeated the United Stats Sports University, 4-2 courtesy of a terrifc first half on Tuesday at Harper Davis Field.

The Majors took a commanding lead with three goals in the opening 45 minutes and held off a second-half rally by the visitors. Millsaps improved to 7-4-2 overall, while USSU dropped to 2-9-2.

The visitors managed two goals after the break, but Millsaps secured the win with a late fourth goal. USSU tallied 12 shot attempts, while the Majors recorded nine. However Millsaps had a 4-3 on-target advantage.

Freshman goalkeeper Edward Steinwand earned his second win of the season and first in a full 90 minutes of action, recording one save.

Sophomore Drew Mckeithen scored one goal on his only shot, making a significant impact for Millsaps. Fellow freshman Myles Walden and Abram Lawless both scored as well. Lawless netted the game-winning goal, his shot finding the back of the net on one of his two attempts.

Sophomore Ellis Dykes and senior Sam Cagle both contributed an assist each to round out the offensive attack.

The first half commenced with Millsaps gaining early momentum. Mckeithen capitalized on an assist from Dykes and Cagle off a nifty passing play to score in the ninth minute, establishing a 1-0 lead.

The Majors continued to apply pressure, and Walden doubled the advantage in the 33rd minute off a deflected ball from a set piece.

Lawless further extended Millsaps' lead with a goal in the 37th minute after he booted a ball over the keeper's head off a turnover. The half concluded with Millsaps holding a 3-0 advantage.

The second half began with Millsaps maintaining the lead, despite increased offensive pressure from USSU. Early in the half, the visitors attempted several shots, but Millsaps held firm defensively. In the 70th minute, DeMarcus Hawkins found the back of the net for the Eagles, narrowing the home team's lead to 3-1.

The Majors responded swiftly with an own goal in the 76th minute, extending their lead to 4-1. As the half progressed, the Eagles continued to press, and Hawkins scored again in the 87th minute, bringing the score to 4-2. Millsaps managed to close the game with a two-goal cushion, securing the victory.

Millsaps will resume conference play and travel to face Oglethorpe University in Atlanta on Saturday. Opening kick is set for 12:30 p.m. CT with live video and live stats available at gomajors.com.
