ATLANTA — The Millsaps men's soccer team fell to Oglethorpe University with a final score of 3-1, despite a strong showing from the Majors at Oglethorpe Track and Field on Saturday.
Senior
Michael Hamauei posted five saves during his nearly 82 minutes in goal. Classmate
Hogan Payne scored with his only shot on target.
Freshman
Abram Lawless contributed an assist while also registering a shot on goal. Sophomore
Ellis Dykes recorded two shots on goal for Millsaps (7-5-2, 1-3 SAA).
Junior
Braden Walters attempted the first Major break through with a shot in the 16th minute, but it was blocked by an Oglethorpe defender.
Dykes then showcased his competitive skills with a kick top right of the goal post in the 30th minute. However, Oglethorpe's goalkeeper would come down with the save to keep the matchup scoreless.
Soon afterwards Oglethorpe (6-6-1, 2-2 SAA) responded with a goal in the 33rd minute to build an early 1-0 lead.
Millsaps continued to press the Stormy Petrels, with freshman
Myles Walden taking a shot shortly after in the 34th minute. Walden's shot was just short out left of the soccer post.
Hamauei made a crucial save against Oglethorpe's attempt in the 35th minute to keep the deficit at one. As the first half concluded, Millsaps trailed 1-0.
The second half began with significant action as Oglethorpe increased their lead with two quick goals. The Stormy Petrels scored in the 63rd minute, followed by a goal a minute later to push the home team ahead, 3-0.
Millsaps responded with a concerted effort on offense, culminating in a late goal by Payne, assisted by Lawless in the 90th minute.
Despite a late surge by the Majors, Millsaps concluded the matchup trailing to the Stormy Petrels, 3-1 on Saturday.
The Majors will continue conference action against Southwestern University on Friday, Oct. 24 in Gerogetown, Texas, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Live video and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
