JACKSON, Miss. — The Millsaps women's soccer team was unable to stop Belhaven at home, falling 3-0 in the Riverside Derby on Tuesday night at Harper Davis Field.
Senior Emily Lozano recorded 13 saves during her full 90 minutes in goal, facing 37 shots and allowing three goals.
Freshman Lola Downer managed one shot on goal, while junior Alex Bremond attempted one shot in the match.
In the first half, Belhaven maintained offensive pressure early, with Lozano making a reflexive save at the 16th minute moments after Belhaven (10-3-2) hit the crossbar. Despite Lozano's efforts, the Blazers managed to find the net first with a goal moments later in the 17th minute.
As the half progressed, Lozano continued to keep her head in the matchup by making multiple stops, including another save in the 24th minute. However, the Majors faced a setback when the Blazers scored once more in the 35th minute, extending their lead. The Blazers would hold their advantage to end the first half, leading 2-0.
The second half began with Belhaven maintaining offensive pressure. The Majors countered with their best chance of the match in the 58th minute when Downer was one-on-one with the Belhaven keeper. The foe punched the shot up high just over the crossbar.
Looking for luck, Bremond would respond with a shot in the 59th minute but would be go wide to the left of the goal.
Despite effort by Downer and Bremond, Belhaven increased their margin to 3-0 with another score in the 70th minute to take down the Majors, 3-0 on Tuesday night.
