ATLANTA — The Millsaps women's soccer team was defeated by Oglethorpe University by a final score of 3-1 on Saturday at Oglethorpe Track and Field.
Senior
Emily Lozano recorded 13 saves over 90 minutes, facing 32 shots in the match. Classmate
Keely Marshall scored a goal with her only shot on target, contributing a penalty kick tally.
The first half commenced with Millsaps focusing on defensive resilience. Lozano in goal made several crucial saves to keep her team in contention. Oglethorpe would brake the deadlock in the 35th minute with a goal to take an early lead.
Millsaps continued to withstand pressure, with Lozano adding to her save tally by denying two consecutive shots in the 42nd minute from her conference opponents. The half concluded with Millsaps trailing, as the team aimed to regroup for the next half down 1-0.
The second half began with Oglethorpe maintaining pressure through several corner kicks and shots, but Lozano's saves kept Millsaps in contention between the 55th and 58th minute.
A pivotal moment occurred in the 58th minute when Marshall converted a penalty kick, leveling the score at 1-1.
Oglethorpe responded in the 72nd minute with another goal to extend their lead to 2-1.
Despite continued defensive efforts from Millsaps, including multiple saves by Lozano, Oglethorpe extended their advantage in the 88th minute with another goal to close out the scoring.
Lozano would finalize the matchup for the Majors with a final save in the 90th minute. The Majors fell in a hard-fought battle to the Stormy Petrels, 3-1 on Saturday.
The Majors will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 24 facing Southwestern University in a conference matchup, beginning at 5 p.m. in Georgetown, Texas. Live video and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
