SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The Millsaps men's soccer team put up a valiant effort, falling 3-1 to No. 16 Trinity University. Despite the loss, Millsaps played with a chip on their shoulders as a unit against their conference contenders on Sunday at Paul McGinlay Field.
Trinity (13-1, 6-0 SAA) entered as the No. 16 team in the NCAA Division III National Power Index, but got all they could handle from visiting Millsaps (7-7-2, 1-5 SAA).
Senior
Michael Hamauei recorded six saves during the match, including four in the first half. Freshman
Myles Walden scored for the Majors, recording two shots on goal. Classmate
Raul Blandon contributed offensively by taking a shot on goal aside from Walden.
The first half featured strong goalkeeping from Hamauei who made crucial saves to prevent the opposing team from scoring. Millsaps found themselves trailing after Trinity successfully converted a penalty kick in the 20th minute to take the first lead.
A second goal by the Tigers pushed their advantage to 2-0 in the 29th minute. Walden had his first opportunity before both goals in the 17th minute, which was saved by the Tiger goalkeeper. The first half concluded with the Majors trailing by two goals.
In the second half, Millsaps found a breakthrough in the 70th minute when Walden scored, narrowing the deficit to 2-1. A ball was booted ahead and deflected off a Tiger defender and Walden corralled the ball in open space. He met the goalie one-on-one and shot the ball over the keeper's head and outstretched arms across frame, who was covering the lower part of the goal.
Trinity responded in the 80th minute with a goal extending their lead to 3-1. Millsaps continued to press with shots from freshman
Abram Lawless in the 74th minute and sophomore
Ellis Dykes in the 83rd minute but was unable to alter the score further. Dykes was also one-on-one with the keeper, with his shot going just wide to the left.
The period concluded with Trinity maintaining their advantage, ending the match with a 3-1 victory over the Majors.
